I haven't seen anything suggesting a hijacking. It is a new plane (out being shown off with many potential buyers on board) so it may have developed some sort of problem.

Fifty people were on board, including potential buyers, diplomats and journalists.

Helicopter rescue teams, earlier forced to abort an aerial survey because of bad weather, were also set to resume their search.

The Sukhoi Superjet-100, Russia's first new passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago, has been widely considered the country's chance to regain a foothold in the international passenger plane market.

Developed by the civil aircraft division of Sukhoi - with the co-operation with Western partners - officials were showing off their 75- to 95-seat plane during a "Welcome Asia'' tour that had already included stops in Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan.

It took off from the Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, at 2.21pm yesterday for what was supposed to be a quick test flight - the second of the day.

It dropped off the radar just 21 minutes later, shortly after the crew asked air traffic control for permission to drop from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet (3,000 metres to 1,800 metres), said Daryatmo, chief of the national search and rescue agency.

They didn't explain the change of course, which occurred near Salak mountain, he said. Though drizzling at the time, it was not stormy, and there was no obvious sign of distress.

It was unclear if yesterday's incident would change that, with officials saying they were waiting for the results of the investigation. Most wanted to know whether the problem was mechanical or pilot error.

Daryatmo said among the 50 people on board the plane were potential buyers from several major local airlines.

Reporters also filled seats as did several people from the Russian Embassy.

It was a demonstration flight and not a commercial one so all the people on board were invited to be there. Theoritically possible but highly unlikely one of them would hijack the thing.

Update: Wreckage spotted but no word of its condition (crashing on a ledge has probably caused at least a bit of damage one would think!) and no word on passengers. http://enews.earthlink.net/article/int?guid=20120509/2fd686a1-dc37-40ae-a29a-dadaedb6b2d2

Helicopters had resumed a search halted earlier because of bad weather. They saw the wreckage along a cliff on the mist-shrouded mountain, Maj. Ali Umri Lubis, of Atang Sanjaya Air base, told Metro TV.

"The helicopter just informed us that they spotted the wreckage about 10 minutes ago," Lubis said. "It was at about 5,000 feet. The condition of the wreckage is still unclear."

The Sukhoi Superjet-100, Russia's first new passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago, left Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon for what was supposed to be the second demonstration flight of the day. Potential buyers and journalists were on board.

This is very sad. In my opinion, RJ's and Junglejets are fragile and disposable. Airbus and Boeing are arrogant and over subsidized. I was hoping that Sukhoi would provide some competition. It is going to be a bit more difficult for them as of today.

I'm sure that several years ago, many or most people would have said the same thing about riding on French or Brazilian manufactured aircraft.

There is nothing wrong with the design and function of most Russian aircraft. It has usually been things of an operational nature that have caused crashes in that part of the world.

Things like poor maintainance. Article from this April following another crash (a French built but Russian owned and operated jet):

Monday's plane crash was the deadliest in Russia since a domestically produced Yak-42 jet slammed into a riverbank near the city of Yaroslavl after takeoff last Sept. 7, killing 44 people, including the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl professional hockey team.

The International Air Transport Association said in December that global airline safety rates had improved in 2011 but that in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, which includes most former Soviet republics, the rate had risen. Russia itself recorded nine crashes claiming 140 lives last year.

President Dmitry Medvedev ordered an overhaul of Russia's air traffic system after the Yaroslavl crash, acknowledging problems such as shoddy aircraft maintenance, poor flight training, aging manufacturing plants and lax oversight.
