This has to do with possible Malware on your computer and not really anything to do with politics.

If you've seen this message, it is the real deal, and means your computer is infected with a DNS Changing Malware.

This goes for both MACS and PC's. For once, our Govt did its job and is trying to protect people from the nasty's out there. The people that set up the DNSChanger Malware for both Macs and PC's changed the infected computers DNS Servers (normally assigned by your ISP) to go to Rouge DNS Servers, where they could trick your computer into thinking it was actually looking at BankOfAmerica.com's website, or a fake version of ANY other website. Not to say that BankOfAmerica isnt a bunch of snakes, but there are a few people out there who may still use their services. Anyway. Those DNS Servers have been taken offline by the Feds, and they've actually been kind enough to try to let people know about it. However, those services are going offline on July 9th accordingly.

THIS IS LEGIT.

Just a Heads Up.

If you need any assistance in getting rid of any said malware, there are plenty of us techie types of people here on the forums that are willing to help you free of charge.

Thanks for the reminder! And of course, thanks to those government members who were on top of this.

So after July 9th if you try to use the DNS servers in question, instead of getting a message saying you have malware, nothing will happen? Not really doomsday. I guess maybe some elderly lady who only uses her computer twice a year might have to call a repair tech next time she goes to use her computer.

IMO it's not the government's job to create a DNS safety net for people that have a virus.

No way am I going to visit a government website to allow it to check for anything.

And I agree with Brandon - it's not the government's job to protect the internet. This is how they "get" people. They tell them they were keeping them safe when they took down DNS servers, so therefore people believe that the government takes down DNS servers only to keep them safe.

Same thing with the death penalty. They use guys like Ted Bundy as their poster kids, while in the background they're working toward getting the public to support the idea of a kangaroo court giving the president a secret authorization to shoot civilians on the street.

Stop using cracks and keygens, guys. Also, use linux if you can! ;)

If you got the DNS changer, just format, and no biggie.

Definitely not saying to use a Govt tool to scan your computer. Update your own anti virus and anti malware software and scan your computer. There is nothing particularly special about this malware except for what it does, which means it can be fixed without a special govt tool.

Bump to this thread and reminding people.

But are we sure Nortons, McAfee, etc will get rid of the virus?

Amazon.com and some of the big-name websites should all chip-in and buy or run the DNS's to help keep their customers online. Not the govt.

danno - the quote from angelatc in your sig isn't accurate; there are in fact professional dumpster divers. They've even got their own movie, called "DIVE!" Look it up, I kid you not.

So if someone has a decent anti virus (say Avast) they should be fine?

Lmao Thank you Suzu Your intellect is unmatched Here I was beating my head against the keyboard trying to figure out just what the hell "nasty's" was referring to and bam a godsend like you came along Is your OCD really that unmanagable that you felt the need to make a post entirely dedicated to pointing out flawed spelling or rather what could have just been a slip of the brain BTW I left out all punctuation just for you Im sure everyone would appreciate if you quoted me and edited them in Some people just might not get what the POINT of the post was

I'm still trying to understand how we know our antivirus software hasn't been infiltrated by the government. Imagine thinking you are doing a virus scan while the entire time, you are giving someone all of your information.

Yeah - my thoughts are:
Install Micro$sft security patch = install gvmt spy program
check to see if you have problem = install gvmt spy program
They are taking down Internet domains by making them unreachable by removing DNS entries and directing them elsewhere. What if this is about taking down DNS servers that are not censored?

download combofix to your desktop ahead of time.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/
if something changes your dns, it should correct the problem.

combofix is self-contained, so you don't need to install it.
just run it if something hijacks your puter.
i keep it on my desktop.

There was an an update to Avast this year with a feature (filerep, webrep, reputation cloud services) that sends parts of your local files and sites you access to them. Since Avast is outside the US it would probably be a good way for government to get around US laws in accessing our data.

Ya, I've seen most of it. It's a great film, I think more people should do it. I'd do it if it wasn't illegal because more private property owners would allow it if it wasn't illegal for them to allow it.
