In 1976 the fight for the Republican Nomination was a hot one between Reagan and Ford. Just as we see today with the Paul campaign, the Reagan campaign used a delegate strategy.

There was talk of Reagan aides "stealing delegates," aka, trying to unbind delegates.

In 1975, federal courts "suggested" that the national "convention could ignore requirements of state law if it wished to do so."

What this 1975 court "suggestion" is saying is that if the national convention wished to vote to unbind delegates, it could do so and would not be breaking the law.

Because of this, the Temporary Rules Committee that meets a week before the RNC, voted to "bar defections by national convention delegates legally bound to a presidential candidate." This pre-convention committee was largely made up of Ford supporters.

My point is that it would appear completely possible to unbind delegates at the national convention, but it must be something that is kept relatively quiet. And we must watch all dealings at the convention and pre-convention to make sure we don't get screwed over.

Isn't it ironic that all of the 2012 GOP candidates were trying to compare themselves to Reagan, while Ron Paul is the closest to him when it comes down to seeking the GOP nomination?

Consider this a warning, Republican establishment.

Especially interesting is the 2nd article that I cited. The questions they raise are the exact same that are hot topics today.

edit: Just realized I cited the wrong article, will fix in a second!

Ahem.

Ron Paul led the Texas delegation for Reagan at that convention.

The words 'grandmother' and 'suck eggs' are going through my head right about now....

I'm not giving advice to Paul obviously. Just bringing up a good point for discussion on these forums. Obviously he doesn't roam about these boards for campaign advice.Or does he... :toady:
