Is this true? Will these Ron Paul delegates really vote for Romney on the first ballot and not abstain, or are they just saying this so they don't create any waves.

"The scenario is different in Nevada, where the state's Feb. 4 contest was binding. Some Paul delegates told the Associated Press this weekend they will adhere to party rules and support Romney this summer despite the convention's outcome."

From the article:

In the end, Paul isn't closer to winning the nomination after this weekend.

Patently false.

Most people who click a yahoo news article read only the headline and the comments.

So that's a good thing in this case

Ron Paul could win 25 states' delegates and the media will still be reporting that he does not have a chance. It is so ridiculous.

From the comments it looks like over 85% are positive.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. RP supporters will be the state chair at the RNC so really nothing is stopping them from reporting the abstentions at roll call.

I'm tired of the same cliche's. Ron has every bit of a chance Mitt has to win the nomination. They keep talking like they "know" something the rest of us don't and if that's the case then the only reason Mitt has an advantage is because they're purposely messing with Ron's chances. Let's stop trying to manipulate the masses because we're not that stupid and it's down right insulting how they play innocent.

Ron Paul has every chance at this nomintation and considering all the bullshit he and everyone has been through for him, he's won it 4 times over. We're just waiting for the rest of America to stand up for it.

A couple of things to keep in mind. If a bound delegate were to publicly say that they would ignore their binding and intend to abstain on the first ballot, that would be grounds for a challenge to their credentials at the convention. So no delegate would publicly say such a thing.

Second, the author is assuming these delegate votes will be there for Romney on the first ballot. Remember assume makes an ass of u and me ;)

from one article : But those delegates are required to vote for Romney, right?

Not so fast.

The Ron Paul campaign could actually ask those "disguised" Romney delegates to abstain during the first round of voting in Tampa.* If Romney did not win on the first ballot, those delegates would then become unbound and would be able to support Ron Paul.

In fact, Ronald Reagan considered using this tactic against Gerald Ford in 1976.* The following is from a 1976 article entitled "Reagan Forces May ‘Steal’ Ford Votes"....

“In secret strategy sessions, Reagan aides have toyed with the idea of asking delegates to abstain as long as their state laws require them to honor the primary verdicts.* This would prevent the President from riding up an early-ballot victory.* Then, in subsequent ballots, they could legally switch to Reagan.

Delegates have abstained from voting before.* Back in 2008, at least 14 delegates abstained from voting at the Republican national convention.

So what would happen if the Ron Paul campaign was able to get 100 or 150 "Romney delegates" to abstain from voting during the first ballot in Tampa?

That is a very intriguing question.
