I think that the right to do with our bodies as we wish is a very basic fundamental right. I also think (and have personal experience) that the candidates' views on these basic rights are very good talking points when trying to sway someone away from their chosen candidate. That surprised look after they absorb the fact that their candidate wants a nanny state....love it!

And maybe this was brought up before, so I apologize if that's the case

I'm bothered by Huckabee's rise in the polls, because he's way out there on the issue (see below). Some of the talking points aren't very strong, but here's a compendium of some of the other candidates' views on one's personal liberty to smoke (tobacco, that is):

Huckabee: "Huckabee committed to sign a nationwide smoking ban in public places, should such a measure win approval in Congress." - http://news.aol.com/elections-blog/2007/08/30/huckabee-commits-to-nationwide-smoking-ban/

Obama - "Barack said he would support a federal smoking ban in public places 'if local efforts proved inadequate'" - http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/cherylkopec/Chm5

Giuliani - "...a similar law was passed by Bloomberg's predecessor, Rudolph Giuliani, which banned smoking in restaurants with more than 35 seats..." - http://media.www.pacepress.org/media/storage/paper424/news/2003/02/05/Features/Business.Owners.Raise.Opposition.To.Smoking.Ban-360659.shtml

Willard "Mitt" Romney - "The ban, enacted by the Legislature earlier this year and signed June 18 by Gov. Mitt Romney, prohibits smoking in all workplaces, restaurants and bars in the state." - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5370899

McCain, the author of the tobacco bill of 1998: "Republican senator John McCain’s antismoking bill, entitled the National Tobacco Policy and Youth Smoking Reduction Act, demanded the tobacco companies to pay $516 billion over a twenty-five year period into a government fund—money that would reimburse states for smoking-related health care costs and pay for antismoking programs and research." - http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:rZlvJstjG0sJ:www.enotes.com/smoking-article+mccain+anti-smoking&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=4&gl=us

Thompson. (not an anti-smoking position, although I have no idea what he's smoking!) - "Thompson said the smoking ban and terror tactics Al Qaeda used to oppress women and intimidate local leaders pushed tribes in western Anbar Province to support U.S. troops." - http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wn_report/2007/09/08/2007-09-08_fred_thompson_al_qaeda_smoking_ban_pushe.html

I smoke and youre right its my choice. I still cant get over the fact that stupid people would sell out their own grandmother becasue she smoked something other than tobacco (which I dont but I dont care if people do) just so they think they will save money on their insurance.

How about we fix the health care problems we have and treat the sick people instead of finding ways to keep them sick? Or cures for cancer? As I understand it, RP does support Alternative Medicine.

I made another post about a guy named Royal Raymond Rife, probably wont get a lot of attention but basically the guy was the father of the modern microscope today and had a conclusion that all cancers were caused by viruses. Then he had an ingenius concept. Dont know how well this will relate to history but this is how I understand it. An opera singer and a wine glass. We all know this story. Shatter the wine glass with the sound of her voice. A higher pitched tone will destroy smaller wine glasses. Why cant we use teh same concept on viruses? Ok if its not cancer and say H5N1, or AIDS, why cant we destroy the harmful cells in a persons body by using resonate frequencies?

Just google Royal Raymond Rife.

The reason they dont want us smoking is because we are owned by them and they dont want to see their property damaged. Same way as the military used to try to enforce military laws that enlisted personnel could not get tatoo's or body piercings without authorization because getting a tatoo was destruction of government property. This smoking crap is the same thing.

Oh and one more thing, we have less smokers now, how is it that teh number of lung related illnesses keeps going up? Could it be the cars we drive do more damage to our lungs that cigarettes?

Obama - "Barack said he would support a federal smoking ban in public places 'if local efforts proved inadequate'"

Scary stuff... I can't believe politics has gone this far down the tubes. It's the basic formula for national government these days:

"_______ said he would support a federal _____ for ____ if local efforts proved inadequate."

It people accept this general idea (which lots already have!) then where does it end?

I've got a quick question kind of off the smoking topic but the position of President is part of the EXECUTIVE BRANCH. It is not for them to write laws. That is the job of the Legistative Branch. Executive Branch enforces the laws, and can VETO laws passed by the Legislative Branch, as a part of the checks and balances.

Why are all of these idiots all trying to Legislate when it is beyond the powers granted to them in the Constitution?

I think you are a little misguided with the title.
"anti-smoking health nut candidates"

I doubt these candidates care about people's health at all. They just want to control your life.
It should read "anti-smoking control freak candidates"

My husband likes to have cigars every once in a while and it literally makes me physically ill for some reason. I will get a headache for hours and feel nauseated. This being said though, I won't tell anyone where they can and cannot smoke unless it is a private establishment. If a restaurant owner decides not to allow smoking, then that is their choice. Individual restaurants should be the ones making this decision rather than putting a ban at the federal level.

In response to the Rife machine:
Research Hulda Clark (I think I got her name right). She is someone doing that kind of thing today. I recently got a "Zapper" with a program specifically for Lyme disease (which I have), that works on electrical signals. I thought it sounded a bit kooky, but it killed off the active Lyme bacteria that I could feel right away!! (I could hardly turn my neck and after 1.5 hours, my shoulders didn't even feel tense. So cool! Now if it were just legal for the company to tell people what these things do! Right now it's not a "medical device" in the US, but it is in Europe. Whatever!--it works!
