Police arrested a well-bronzed New Jersey woman they say brought her 5-year-old daughter into a tanning booth, causing the young girl to suffer burns.

Patricia Krentcil, 44, was charged with second-degree child endangerment, although she says her daughter, Anna, was never exposed to the booth’s harmful UV rays and that the sunburn was a result of playing outside. The Nutley, N.J. mother told New York’s CBS 2 TV that she loves to tan. “I’ve been tanning my whole life, going to the beach, tanning salons and so forth,” she said, although she insisted she would never let her fair-skinned daughter accompany her into the tanning booth.

Krentcil told NBC 4 New York that her daughter accompanies her on errand runs, and that tanning is included in those errands, but emphasized she did not let her daughter join her in the tanning booth.

The controversy started when a school nurse noticed the burns, which Anna attributed to going tanning “with mommy.” The school then contacted child services. Officials suspected that Krentcil took the child into the tanning booth without the salon’s knowledge.

New Jersey law does not allow anyone younger than 14 to use tanning facilities due to the health risks. Teens older than 14 are allowed to go to salons with parental consent.

Anna’s father, Rich Krentcil, told NBC 4 New York that the claims were inaccurate.

“This whole big thing happened, and everyone got involved,” said Rich Krentcil. “It was 85 degrees outside, she got sunburned. That’s it. That’s all the happened.”

Do tanning booths make you orange? I thought it was the fake tans and oils and stuff that do that to you. I was under the impression that tanning booths actually tan people pretty naturally.

I know it gives you vitamin D, tanning booths do have health benefits. Obviously it can be overdone, just like anything else.

Authorities say Patricia Krentcil's daughter, now 6, turned up at her elementary school in Nutley, New Jersey, with a sunburn on April 24, prompting a school nurse to contact police.

The extremely tan Krentcil, 44, appeared on Wednesday in a Newark courtroom where she pleaded not guilty to a charge of child endangerment.

New Jersey is among several states that have adopted regulations prohibiting anyone age 14 or under from using ultraviolet devices because of the risk of skin cancer.

Krentcil's chocolate-brown hue testifies to countless hours spent under the intense ultraviolet light of a tanning bed or out in the sun soaking up rays.

But she denied bringing her fair-skinned daughter into the tanning booth of a salon that she frequents.

"I would not permit it," she told CBS TV in New York.

The owner of City Tropics Tanning said his staff did not see Krentcil get into the stand-up booth with her daughter when she came in for an April 22 tanning session.

"Of course not," said the owner, who would only give his first name of Anthony.

"My workers wouldn't let a child go into a tanning room. She was outside with her father," he said. "If she went into the tanning room I think she would have disintegrated. She's a little girl."

The owner said police never came in to speak with his workers about the incident.

Nutley police referred questions about the case to the Essex County prosecutor's office, where spokeswoman Katherine Carter said the investigation was continuing.

Krentcil did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

I think the black liner on her lip is actually a gauge that she had tattooed on. If you can't see the lip tattoo, you're almost dark enough.

But seriously, I didn't know that white people could actually get that dark--there must be additional skin-dyeing of some sort.

Yeah, I've never understood tanning/sunbathing and I'm glad because I think my skin looks pretty good for a 42 year old. I was always into the more athletic stuff like doing flips off the diving board while my friends spent the whole time in the hot sun sweating and basically (in my mind) torturing themselves so they could get the perfect tan. I know the lotions will turn you orange, but don't tanning beds do as well?

I have a gay (male) friend who talks about his younger days and some of the crazy things some of his friends would do. For instance, one of my favorite sayings from those stories is where one of his friends approaches an overweight woman in spandex and tells her, "Now I know you didn't look at yourself in the mirror after putting that on and say, "Spec-tac-u-lar" (you gotta use the whole gay man voice when you say spectacular). The same applies to these bozos. Who could possibly look at themselves in the mirror, or hell, look at their own photos and think, wow dude, I look great!

I fully believe in the NAP and support it... except when it comes to New Jersey. As a Pennsylvanian (northeast) I have a very strong bias/hatred for NJ. It depends on the type of bulbs used--there are UVA and UVB bulbs. The UVB bulbs are the ones that are beneficial and help to stimulate natural Vitamin D production in your body.

Stupid, yes. Child endangerment? Srsly? I don't see it. Parents here in AZ subject their innocent children to heavy-duty UV rays most of the year. Arrest every parent in southern AZ who doesn't keep their kids inside almost all day for 6-7 months a year! :rolleyes:

I used to think like that about tanning salons, but there was a key component of the tanning salon experience I knew nothing about. I actually went to a tanning salon one time cause I found out that they help your vitamin D levels and also I found a coupon for a 2 for 1 to a place that uses the correct type of lighting.. So why not give it a go and get a couple sessions in for under $20 and see what all the fuss is about? I'm super white. I don't really care that much, but it's also nice having a little bit of a tan.

I work 40 hours a week. I try to go outside and do active things on the weekend, but it's not always sunny on the weekend. Ultimately, I have to take vitamin D supplements on occasion.

So, I go to the salon and make an appointment for 6:15pm, during the winter when it is dark. First thing I notice, lots of hot girls at tanning salons. Second thing I notice, my tanning session was only supposed to be for 8 minutes. What a rip-off, I thought. I got out after 7 minutes and still ended up a bit sun burned! I never quite peeled, but it took a while for the burning to go away but I was left with a noticeably darker tan. My second session, I got out after 6 minutes and that was about perfect. I got a nice little tan that lasted for a few weeks and it only took 13 minutes out of my life.

So the key to the tanning salon industry is that you can come in at any time and get an hours worth of sun in under 10 minutes.

So if you have a lot of free time, go out and tan in the sun. I highly recommend it, it's very healthy.. just don't over do it like this lady. BUT tanning beds to have some health benefits and certainly are a time saver.
