I don't exactly know how he rates purity, but if Ron Paul says you're the real deal, you might be pretty pure:)

How is purity rated?

I believe the WAG method was used. ;)

Input is more than welcome on any of these ratings. We need input and review, especially if it's in your State and you have a local opinion.

If you have new candidates, post about them. If a candidate currently on the list has a major downside or disagreement with Ron Paul, post that too.

Many people want to know what the odds of winning are for each candidate. I would suggest that we somehow highlight the candidates that have a great chance of winning. Probably better not to specifically call out candidates as long-shots. It would be demoralizing, and hey, you never know.

the problem with a purity rating is different people have different hot buttons and if someone doesn't hit your hot button, it doesn't matter if the other 90% is pure. It might be more helpful to state views on specific issues, but I see you link their pages, so it gives people somewhere to start.

Welcome to the forum!

Does that mean that the Libertarian Party doesn't have a Primary in your District?

Once the Primaries are over, the list will be a guide for the general election. Everyone that doesn't get crossed out will still be in it to win it!

Yeah, we have the links, and people should research their local candidates.

As for the rating, the person who originally did that had their own method, which included reducing the score if issues were not addressed on the candidates page (i.e. assume the worse). Ratings have been adjusted since the first pass based on input. Take them with a grain of salt. Electability is an important factor too.

Does anyone from the campaing for liberty have any electibility ideas or chances. I'd love to see these X have a great chance. This #X have a shot and this #X are long shots.

Well, they don't have the full 5 star rating. One thing they both have is a proven track record of some good votes, especially on fiscal matters. Better than the typical big government, borrow and spend GOP candidates. And they have a good chance at winning. The purity rating comes in handy when comparing to other candidates. If they have a 5 star competitor in the race, we can certainly add them.

Art Robinson has been endorsed by Ron Paul, has a decent shot of winning, and is 4 or 5 stars, depending on your view of illegal immigration (he wants to kick them all out). Although, he doesn't say much about civil liberties.

Evan Feinberg and Dan O'Connor should have a 5 star purity rating, but they have longer odds of winning than someone like Robinson, Massie, or Rohrer (Rohrer's name is misspelled).

Richard Mourdock should have 2 stars, at best. He's better than Lugar, but we're talking about a guy who has said that some type of mandatory national service (not necessarily military), is an “interesting idea that needs to be pursued.” He also supports the PATRIOT Act, opposed withdrawal from Iraq "because of the oil interests there", supports the Fair Tax, and opposes both gay marriage and civil unions. He's better than Lugar, but not by a lot.

I don't trust Zach Poskevich as a liberty candidate. He's another Fair Tax guy and he drops a lot of hints that he's for foreign intervention (although not with a Democratic President), trade protectionism, and is a big supporter of the War of Terror. Here are some of the comments he's made to make me distrust him:

“We have ended untold injustices and stopped the spread of tyranny through the power of our Armed Forces.”

“When 'Free Trade' Treaties are based on immoral practices the consequence is economic and political decay.” (This should be considered in conjunction with some of his other policy positions, like prosecuting companies that hire illegals. And that he believes energy independence is a national security issue / the federal government's primary job is national security. He never comes right out and says "trade protectionism, but he drops a lot of hints.)

“America is under attack by Islam”

“Islam is nothing more than a mobster style organization who force submission through intimidation, coercion, and murder” (on his facebook page from March 1)

People will be disappointed if they're expecting good things from him. He's also liable to say things with which we may not want to be associated.

I'm not sure about Sarah Steelman for Missouri Senate -- She'd be better than Akin but reading her website and hearing her talk at the Springfield Lincoln Days gave me some reserves. I did however like John Brunner for Senate, he talks frequently of the Constitution and is a USMC Veteran.

For CD7 Congressional Missouri, Mike Moon hands-down. Very very adherent to the constitution, is a local farmer from Lawrence county, has talked to us, the Paul grassroots, aplenty. We've grilled him on everything, personally I was slightly precarious of his world view and Israel but he said "I don't really know, I'll look into it" then he pulled out a worn-ass notepad and wrote it down and what we thought of it

Just looking real quick, maybe Brenda Lenard. http://www.brendalenardforsenate.com/whybrenda.html

I usually look a lot deeper than just a candidate's web site, though, and I haven't done that for her. I also don't know how serious she is about running.

This is the latest update to our Liberty Candidates list. Check it out, especially your State.

Richard Ehrbar (L) OH-3

Updated again.

Ted Cruz? Really?

Cruz isn't terrible. His race is a lot like Rohrer/Scaringi. Cruz isn't perfect - he's a Fair tax guy (although he wants a super-majority vote to raise taxes), supports the Keystone eminent domain crap, and refers to a non-existent “dangerous dependence on Middle East oil”, but he's decent and has a shot at winning. He opposes SOPA, and indefinite detention without trial, and supported the Texas TSA anti-groping bill last year. He's pretty good on gun rights, opposing foreign claims on US sovereignty, and supports auditing the fed. Not sure where he stands on wars.

By the way, the guy in the Texas legislature that introduced the TSA anti-groping bill last year, David Simpson, is awesome and deserves his own sub-forum. He might be the most libertarian state representatives in the entire country (including a certain someone from NC ;)). He won't even vote for vaccine requirements for college entrance, helmet safety laws for kids playing football, or a ban on texting while driving. He's more libertarian than 90% of registered libertarians.

Broun is also my Congressman, and I refuse to vote for him based on his support for war and the NDAA. I don't see how he could get a 4-star rating. 2-3 stars max in my opinion. I wouldn't recommend him, although admittedly, we could do worse.

Well, he did vote against the Patriot Act extension and the bailouts I believe, so that's good. I think he's done a few other good things, but now I see that he's a co-sponsor of CISPA ... so ... that's not good at all. There is no way he deserves a 4-star liberty rating. At least reduce his rating to 2-3 stars max, and if no one else speaks up in his defense, maybe take him off the list.

NDAA plus CISPA, that's not a good mix of things to be supporting. We could do worse in NE Georgia I guess, but still.
