View Full Version : I am a delegate to the Texas State Convention!

The Brazos County Republican Convention lasted more than seven hours today, but it was worth it as I was voted in as one of the 78 delegates to the state convention in June. Someone "in the know" at the convention informed me that the majority of the delegates elected are not Ron Paul supporters but that we have a sizable contingent, and it's possible that the majority of the alternates are RP people, because around half of the alternates were added to the list on the actual convention floor rather than committee and most of those that lined up to add themselves in were for Paul. We had a "delegate training" meeting on Thursday, and I saw most of the people at the convention today, and most of us are either delegates or alternates, with a few of those also getting their spouses on the list of alternates as well.

When it was over, I was starving and tired, but thankfully there's a really good Mexican food place near the hotel where the convention is at, and now I'm relaxing at home watching the Rangers baseball game from earlier today (Don't tell me who won, I'm only in the 4th inning so far.) :)

The resolutions portion took much longer than the delegate nominations as many people spoke for and against several planks and amendments (it was a very good platform we approved today too, including planks to abolish the federal reserve, require Congressional declaration to go to war, and eliminating several federal departments.)

Anyway, just wanted to share. I'll let y'all know how things go at State of course, assuming I can get a hotel room. :D

Texas has 155 delegates but I am still lost how it works. Can most of the 155 be for Paul but are forced to vote Santorum/Mitt/Newt until the second vote? Or do Paul people run for Paul listed?

Because of redistricting lawsuits, Texas has not had our primary yet. The primary will be on may 29. The Texas state convention is the following week. Delegates to the national convention will be selected at the state convention in proportion to the votes received in the primary. Texas delegates will be bound to their candidate on the first ballot by state GOP rules.

I will see you in Fort Worth; my county convention was today as well and I'm a delegate :)

I am an alternate delegate to state picked at Brazos county today. Room looked to be half Ron Paul out of 130 total. Wish we could have had a few more of the 3000 who watched him speak this past Tuesday evening at Texas A&M. But it was all done fairly. Nobody trying to keep anybody out. Problem is there are more people waving home-made signs at his speech than actually show up to do the real important thing which is to become a delegate. Nobody to blame but ourselves.

All of the county Republican office holders are delegates. 78 delegates I think in Brazos. No Romney or Santorum bumper stickers in parking lot of T-shirts. Lots of Ron Paul bumper stickers and T-shirts. Even politicians talking about how maybe the money didn't line up behind the perfect Presidential candidate but the most important thing is to beat Obama. Politicians blaming Dems for squashing all their wonderful legislation. They didn't talk about all that wonderful Bush-era legislation the Republicans wrote when they were in the driver's seat. Politicians still fooling voters as has always been done and always will be.

Can we take over this party at local level? I think it's possible. We just have to stick to it. Then we can become the school board members, city councilmen, state reps, etc. Democratic party is very weak here so Republicans hold all the seats. Heck, the local politicians and county Republican leaders are pretty reasonable. They are far better than our representatives in DC.

Surprising to see several very young voters making Santorum-style resolutions (capital punishment for abortion doctors, internet policing to eradicate porn). The Paul people are pretty young, but the Santorum folks are very young too. Far more young Paul supporters.

Looking forward to learning more at Ft. Worth State Convention. Whoop!

So I missed it? I've posted in these forums that I'm new to Texas and I need help. I contacted Collins Bailey, in MD, for help. He tried; but he really can't help me here. I signed up with the Ron Paul 2012 campaign to be a delegate. They didn't contact me. I called them. They said they would contact me when the time was right. They didn't. I gave my email address, over the phone to someone who was holding delegate training in Austin. I don't live in Austin; but was willing to travel there to get training. I was not contacted again. I've organized my community, and they were willing to vote for me as a delegate.

I still have their support. Let's not let that go to waste. Someone PLEASE talk to me so that I know what to do, and so that I can tell those who would have supported me, what to do next.

PLEASE!

someone posted this in the Texas subforum:

In order to get nominated to go to the state convention, most counties have a "temporary nominating committee" that hold interviews BEFORE the senate district/county convention. Go to your county's republican party website or call them and ask what the process is.

some of the conventions are not past they go on through the 21st. Was yours today?

Here! So it's the 21st but please PM someone who is a delegate in this thread and find out what you need to do, who is head of THEIR area since they might be able to put you into touch with whomever is in charge of YOUR area....

PM Matt Collins if you don't get an answer, he should at least have a Texas contact for you to start with.

ISurprising to see several very young voters making Santorum-style resolutions (capital punishment for abortion doctors, internet policing to eradicate porn).

Were those proposed in the Resolutions committee? Because neither of those was in the printed platform that we voted on.

Anyway, Santorum had a ton of support in this county, especially after Perry dropped out. I think Rick Santorum dropping out when he did really took the wind out of the local party, there is no one who's fired up about Romney. I agree with you though on the disappointment about not getting more of the kids who watched the speech to come out for the convention and be delegates. I heard so many of them around me that night talking about how much they love Ron, some of them drove from places out of town to see him, yet they can't get up on a Saturday morning and get to a hotel in Bryan? I mean, we could have OWNED that convention. Heck, probably only about 50 more people would have been enough for us to suspend the rules and replace any delegates we wanted with Ron Paul supporters. Now, that might have been a bit of bad form, but it would have been possible, but not with the low number and the lack of organization.

But I'm looking on the bright side. I'm excited to get to go to State and see what happens there. I was selected in 2000 but for various reasons, I didn't get to make the trip. I will do everything in my power to make sure I don't miss this one!

I was elected as an alternate in Hays County today. We got a good 1/3 of the delegation going to state and lots of good resolutions were approved incuding banning Agenda 21, abolishing the IRS, repealing NDAA, legalizing raw milk, end to birthright citizenship, US out of the UN, and several other good ones and only two that I voted NAY on. All in all, it went pretty well. I think they're finanally realizing we aren't going away. :) On to STATE!

The Travis Senate District Temporary Committee Meetings are scheduled for April 16th and 17th, 7-9 PM, at the TCRP HQ at Cameron & US183.

You must appear before these committees to submit Resolutions, Rules suggestions, your request to be nominated as an at-large State GOP Delegate, resolve any questions about your voter registration or Oath of Affiliation, etc.

The committee work is absolutely crucial to the conduct of the April 21st Convention. It is physically impossible to accomplish all the work needed on April 21st without these advance committee meetings.

It is customary for the work of Temporary Committees to be accepted and adopted by the Permanent Committees (of the same name and nature of business), and the entire SD Convention assembly, although it is possible for a majority (over 1/2 or 2/3rds, depending on what is being proposed) at the SD Convention to vote on changes to the committee work.

If you do NOT participate in the temporary convention meetings, you will practically have no chance to accomplish changes on Convention day, owing to things like timing logistics, lack of understanding and preparation, etc.

+1 for all the good news that we're taking over the GOP at the ground level, if this continues into the future then we'll be the GOP-establishment :D

I just don't understand though why so many come to the rallies but not the delegation, campaign needs to take people's numbers & stuff of the attendees & wake'em up later regarding delegation

Anyways, I'm just going to wonder about what if the Ron Paul people were the GOP-establishment :D

I was speaking about the National Ron Paul Campaign. There is currently no real support the campaign has set up in Texas and if they try to start now it is too late.
If you need any help, there are a few hundred of us at Ron Paul Dallas 2012 willing to offer any help and/or support you may need. Our website is www.ronpauldallas2012.com our email is info@ronpauldallas2012.com and our facebook page is www.facebook.com/RonPaulDallas2012 I'm currently uploading a delegate training video to Youtube.com and If you are interested in getting any more help feel free to ask. It's helpful if you ask specific questions though. If ANYONE needs any help with delegate training let me know. If you need to rent a space to get your delegate training done we can get the campaign to at least cover that expense for you. But you have to let us know so that we can lend a hand.

Thursday in San Antonio, there were about a dozen people walking around with flyers on how to be a delegate, plus clipboards to sign up for distribution list, plus they had a table with a 12 foot long banner. And there were at least 2 announcements about them over the PA system before Ron Paul spoke and after.

Warning: anecdotal evidence!

I know that at least three (... haha) people who went to the rally at A&M are diehard Obama supporters who just wanted to hear what Ron had to say. Further, not everyone at A&M is registered to vote in Texas, and if they are, they're not likely to be able to participate in caucuses because they're not registered where A&M is.

That's one reason why you have a lot of signwavers at a rally, but not as many showing up to be delegates.

Those people work for the campaign and are really waisting a lot of time and effort on those lists because it's too little too late. Our Conventions are on Saturday and they have yet to do shit. Like I said before, ask those of us who have been working on this for a few months to get you the help you need.

Some hints for those going to TX County conventions this next weekend or two.

First, know that we had 130 people attend the Brazos convention. About 40% seemed to be for Paul. The old guard who appear every year are about 80 people for a county our size. Each county politician was given a high delegate position. That consumes about half of the 78 delegates our county was allotted. Then 78 delegates are allotted as well. After delegate committee came up with a slate, I think they had 140 delegates plus alternates. There was a segment of the meeting where people could add themselves or perhaps a family member to the alternate list.

If you are the first alternate, you will be voting almost all the time at State. The first ten alternate delegates were assigned to local politicians' wives. I am around delegate 11-15 and expect to get voting privileges whenever 11 of the 89 delegates ahead of me are out shopping.

I recommend, and regret not doing so, to dress so they know you are for Ron Paul. This is a game of puffing and bluffing. You want them to think Paul has more people there than he may have. Wear your Ron Paul T-shirt.

If you haven't found your local Ron Paul leaders, go to Facebook or Meetup. I attended a meetup a few months ago and met the key people. Hopefully one exists in your town. Nonetheless, if you can gather 50 people who will Ron Paul T-shirts, I bet you have the numbers to scare the old guard into negotiating equal representation in delegates. If you get 100, you can take over the convention so long as you have a good parliamentarian on your side.

Hey, why don't you just put signs around town saying Ron Paul will be speaking at the venue when and where the County Convention will be held. You might get 500 with signs. Wouldn't that be a surprise?
