Brent Strafford, an American hero

“La vengeance est un plat qui se mange froid”

“Vengeance is a dish best served cold.”

While all the political news yesterday focused on the end of Rick Santorum’s presidential campaign a colorful drama unfolded in faraway St. Charles, Missouri Tuesday night. This was the scene of the re-scheduled, famous, St. Charles County GOP Convention.

Yes, there was some booing and plenty of disagreements but after all was said and done, the 900 voters who had gathered chose their delegation to move onto State. Finally, we have a winner. And it is not Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee and media darling. The winner is Dr. Ron Paul.

It was a dramatic turn of events for Ron Paul supporters who are used to being defrauded by the GOP but this time persistence, integrity and careful documentation won the day.

It seemed like a year ago but it was only last March 17, 2012, when the St. Charles Convention first tried to convene. At that convention a GOP establishment shut out any new voters, attempting to elect its own preselected slate, ignoring the attending delegates as if they didn’t exist and their votes did not count.

When, on March 17, the organizers announced that the meeting would go dark, that no cameras or audio recording devices would be allowed, apparently to keep from exposing their dark deeds, the attending Ron Paul supporters, and even some Romney supporters, reacted with predictable outrage. And the organizers, expecting, even hoping for such a reaction, called in the police whom they had tipped off in advance and were waiting in the wings. The building was evacuated.

If you need to get caught up, here is that story. Rigged caucus in St. Charles ends in bedlam.

Later, Ron Paul coordinator, Brent Strafford, who is handicapped, attempted to organize and give instructions to the bewildered Ron Paul supporters gathered outside on the parking lot. But the temporary chairman, who was running things, would have none of it. He followed Strafford outside and ordered the police to arrest him. You can see all of this on video. Go to the end of the video to see the arrest. The arrest of Brent Strafford.

A few days later a video-audio emerged where GOP insiders revealed how they had conspired to outwit the vast numbers of Ron Paul supporters who were expected. Yep, I used that terrible “C” word, something that a Ron Paul supporter has learned never to utter without supporting documentation. But how else would you explain this? Here, an undercover camera records the GOP establishment and their secret plan for St. Charles.

Well, now we can finely close the books on the drammatic events in St. Charles. The State GOP were on hand, and a bevy of constitutional lawyers were watching, indeed, people were watching the event all over the world.

Brent Strafford, the man who had been taken away in handcuffs at the first convention, but who kept his dignity and quietly documented what had happened, working to get justice for the people who had given up their time to participate, was elected to replace the caucus chairman who had tried to steal the election. “They meant it for evil. God meant it for good.”

It instructive for the Ron Paul supporters to realize how threatening and feared they are. That the very idea of their participation will prompt people to cheat and to contradict their own deeply held democratic principles to hurt them. And then to justify their deceit to themselves and to their friends. If there had been no cameras and audio, no one would have believed the hypocrisy.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power” We can hope and pray that when the time comes, Brent Stafford, will be more honorable than the man he replaced.
