Very long read. But I was taking a stroll through Barnes and Noble today and the latest Wired Magazing caught my eye. There is a HUGE write up about this multi-billion dollar complex about the NSA is building out in Utah, and goes very deep into the NSA's domestic spying/wiretapping/ and encryption breaking programs. It also talks in detail about the computer system that they are working on to eventually break the best AES encryption algortithms and how it will open up the Pandoras box of domestic and foreign secrets. It also contains stunning quotes from form NSA officials who were involved with them recently, talking bluntly about how the NSA was fully aware they were violating the Constitution but just didnt care, and how the Obama administration had no willingness to roll back this programs, and how they continue to store google, personal email, and financial info of American citizens.

This is the money quote though:

Sitting in a restaurant not far from NSA headquarters, the place where he spent nearly 40 years of his life, Binney held his thumb and forefinger close together. “We are, like, that far from a turnkey totalitarian state,” he says.

Great read though. Take a look and spread it around.

Just bumping the thread, you're right it's a great read.

If anyone is not encrypting their email, they should be!

This is about thread five on this subject.

Not that I'm complaining, I'd think 500 would not be enough.

I agree but we need to start spelling it "enesay" around here. ;)

"Under construction by contractors with top-secret clearances, the blandly named Utah Data Center is being built for the National Security Agency. A project of immense secrecy, it is the final piece in a complex puzzle assembled over the past decade. Its purpose: to intercept, decipher, analyze, and store vast swaths of the world's communications as they zap down from satellites and zip through the underground and undersea cables of international, foreign, and domestic networks. The heavily fortified $2 billion center should be up and running in September 2013. Flowing through its servers and routers and stored in near-bottomless databases will be all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails — parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital 'pocket litter.' It is, in some measure, the realization of the 'total information awareness' program created during the first term of the Bush administration — an effort that was killed by Congress in 2003 after it caused an outcry over its potential for invading Americans' privacy."

So they nixxed it, then brought it back to life. How convenient for them.

I've started calling it the Ministry of Privacy.

It happens the way it always happens. They propose a law, project, action. There is public condemnation. They back down to promote the idea that they are a representative government bound by laws. Then six months later a law, project, action is rewritten and pushed through. The old saying is just as relevant today as it was back then "eternal vigilance is the price of freedom."

I owe you a rep for that.

I dont think enough people understand the degree at which this became dangerous. Too many just shrug when we say Privacy, despite the fact it will come back and bite em in the ass. The most dangerous ones are those little mosquito bites that the person never even notices. And there should be more news because of people reporting on the Invasions of Privacy, not because there is more Technology by which a person can have their Privacy Invaded.

Tyranny does not require Technology, it just makes it easier for a Tyranny to control people.

Out of curiosity, but what do they hope to achieve? I mean, okay, hypothetical, let's say we have a prison state. BIIIIIIIG fucking deal! They've fucked up the country and most of the world, and for what exactly? Just to prove in a bet they can control people? And by the time it's complete, they just rot away and die, or are too old to even manage it?

Yeah, they're fucking stupid if they're serious. Maybe I won't stop them, but I will laugh when I see what is soooooo important that they have to shove a prison state down our throats.

As for the article itself, I'm skeptical about that news source.

"They" do it because they can.

It's really no more complicated than that.

I believe technology is wonderful, but it could be the downfall of our society as a whole. When I speak with friends about this (NSA), they say I am paranoid. People just take for granted everything in today's world. People are obsessed with Hollywood, Sports and Gossip. You don't have to think about this stuff. I mention this all of the time to people and they believe I am some weirdo. My answer is that the majority of Americans need an enema. They need to be cleaned out as a whole so that they can think straight again. There brains have been overloaded with crap for way too long!

I want them to succeed just so they can see how big a fucking deal it is that people had to die over it!

The actual source material is a WIRED article. There is no need to be skeptical about wired, they're a very legit source. Probably one of the few really decent investigative magazines around.

If an individual is majorly paraniod over this, they should stop using more than smoke signals, and drop off the radar ;)

The US building a data center that will be able to decrypt, analyze, monitor, record and pattern connect every single byte of electronic communications on the planet, is not just cause for "paranoia"?

Though, realistically, it kinda makes me scratch my head how this would work. It'd be impossible to utilize the system efficiently unless it's like some sort of search engine like Google. Probably too large for they themselves to navigate. So they wouldn't see my porn stash :P

Complaints aside, I will be VERY fascinated if they pull this off!

They dont do it because they want to end your life. That takes too much effort. They do it so they can better understand HOW to control you. Certain People are more receptive to certain types of information. Others will respond differently. If you know what to expect, you can control the outcome.

Think about this. A bunch of Atheists are being told some misinformation on Faux News. They are going to paint Ron Paul to be as Religious as possible in order to alienate as many people they can. Faux will turn back around, and based on the Demographics, tell the more religious viewers that Ron Paul is closer to having No Religion at all, to which they would take more offense to.

That is one way that your personal and private information is used AGAINST you.

Another thing to consider is that you are a Valuable Resource to be Harvested. You Work. You are willing to do Manual Labor in order to earn enough to survive. And everyone wants a piece of what youve earned. So they do everything possible to convince you to spend money you dont have on shit you dont need. Knowing more about you provides them with an insight that they normally would not have access to in order to harvest the fruits of your labor. They want you to continue working. Ever seen a Banker work a fucking day in their lives? Ha! No, they want YOU to do all the work, produce all the goods, and bring home as little as they can get away with paying you, making sure that you have such little income that you WILL eventually (statistaclly) go bankrupt so they can take even MORE advantage of you by offering the shittiest credit deals possible at the now excused highest interest rate possible.

Its almost ironic in a ceratin sense. They figured out that instead of circling the drain, its easier to just be taken to the bottom and feed off of the scraps that people discard while trying everything possible to stay afloat. They get your house, they get your money, and their only intention is to bring you down to their level so they can feast on your bones. And when they are done, you get shit out and flushed away.

The information that they have on you is nothing more than a tool they will use against you. It leaves you open to the potential abuse from everyone. Criminals will use Facebook to know when youre not home so they know when to break into your house and get away with it. EMployers want to fire you as quickly as possible if you've earned a raise. Yeah, guess what, that facebook picture of you having a beer with a Minor in the photograph? Terminatable Offense. Your Goverment? Well they are controlled by the big Corporations, Banks, and Pharma. They want to misinform you so regardless of who you vote for, youre voting to keep the status quo.

Oh but this is all not that bad? What if you put a GPS on your kid so you always knew where they were at? Then, some child molestor comes along, knows about the GPS and finds a way that they can kidnap your child, do unspeakable atrocities to them, and discare their cold and lifeless body along a roadside that no one will ever find because they were actually smart enough to take care of that pesky GPS problem! It was enabled by your intentions to protect your kid, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The GPS in your kids Backpack or implanted under their skin that was intended to protect them was used against your best intentions to end their life.

What about Search Warrants? Oh, lets just put a camera in your house! Hey, I got an idea, lets go out and arrest anyone who has ever smoked a joint while playing XBox Kinect because it has a camera, can be hacked, and used to record what you are doing inside the privacy of your own home, obtained without a Search Warrant or Probable Cause, even though you didnt hurt anyone while playing Super Mario Kart Wii while you were high as a fucking kite? Lets say you get let off easy (as the state wants to profit from your incarceration) and get sentenced to two weeks in Jail (not Prison, I think prison is like a year or more), and while you are in there, you get ass raped by Bubba the Big Black Butt Basher and end up coming out of your short term confinement with an ass you could drive a truck through and a psychological affective disorder where by you go into a state of panic and hyperventilation every time you see an African American Male, get labeled as a Racist because of such a reaction, then get shot and killed because it is easy enough to find out who you are when you put all that shit up on Facebook. Oh, guess what, Bubba just got released from Jail, and he has your address now too, well, he thinks he needs a little nookie.

Yeah, there is no way information could ever be used against you in any way shape or form to abuse you, ruin your life, take advantage of your financial situation or resources, no way that any Jew was ever wrong about telling anyone like the Thrid Reich that they were Jewish, no way that could be used to make people suffer, yeah, just keep on keepin on and keep on not worrying about it. Until it ends up costing you everything. Everything EXCEPT your Life.

I thought they would be. With all of the videos I watch about terrorism, war, and the videos people had me watch about the OKC bombing I'm positive they have me on some list.

You probably are on some list some where. Oh wait, do you have a Social Security Number? Hell, do you have a PULSE? Yep, youre definitely on a list. What matters is WHICH List.

Psychological Perspective for two seconds. You know you are thousands of times more likely to be killed by a drunk driver than a Terrorist, right? Yet we are all told constantly to "Fear the Terrorists". You are more likely to be killed by a Cop than a Terrorist. Now go be afraid of the Terrorists. Why do people actually fear Terrorists? Because it is repeated day in and day out on TV constantly and has been since 9/11.

Fear is a TOOL that can be used to manipulate the masses into thinking they need protection from Terrorism. Just like GUILT. Guilt is also used as a tool to control people. You should feel guilty because you smoke weed, and that is Immoral, so you should feel guilty about it. Oh yeah, you should also feel guilty about leaving your bathroom light on when youre taking a big fat steaming shit in your toilet because it pollutes the enviornment and kills baby kittens around the world. The whole Climate Change thing thats going on, its all YOUR fault because of the methane coming out of your backside when you fart. Dont mind if your Neighbor farts, were not worried about you saying something about your neighbor, we will take care of that. Our job is to make sure you feel guilty about things you have absolutely no control over, get you to blame yourself for our misdeeds of polluting the enviornment, then, because of that guilt, you'll vote in the first person that says they are gonna fix the enviornment with Carbon Tax Credits, which are nothing more than an excuse for big pollution corporations to continue doing what they are doing, and hell making more money at it, by taking it from you. SO you go along with it and vote for teh Green Candidate.

If they can find out what makes you Afraid, and what makes you feel Guilty, they will use it to their advantage to their own benefit, the people be damned as far as they are concerned.

("They" means Big Corporations and Banks that control the Government, you know, the REAL Terrorists!)

This data collection center is utlimately useless if enough citizens violently rebel. So yes, it's intimidating at first glance but ulitmately useless as we reach critical mass.
