Roughly 1,500 people were inside the venue. Scores of students lined up outside were turned away.

"The exceptionalism that we once had is no longer with us," Paul said. "The idea that you can spread exceptionalism through force is completely wrong. Why don't we have a third option? Why don't we just mind our own business?"

University officials estimated that nearly 1,700 people packed into Ritchie Coliseum for the event and hundreds more were turned away after the facility reached capacity. The crowd was similar to the one President Barack Obama drew here last year when he came to speak about the nation's debt crisis.

I was there. It was awesome. I helped bring and actually got to introduce Ron here in 2008 when he came. The crowd then was about 500. This was packed and the line stretched all the way down the road I think hundreds had to have been turned away. Lots of people new to Ron in the crowd...we are winning.

My mom went with some people from her meetup group! She was floored, got to sit about 10 rows back. Cutoff happened at 1700 people. pics she texted me made it look PACKED
