Help with writing a press release

I've never done this before. I want to send a press release to my local paper, about the Clearwater Freedom Rally this Saturday. My area is about an hours drive south of the there.

Is there a certain department you send them too, any other formalities I should know about?

Why

Brief background on the topic.

Contact info.

Try to stay under 350 words if possible.

Instead of a formal press release, maybe you should just pick up the phone and ask to speak to a reporter or someone that would cover that type of event. I think that would be better.

Also maybe contact a dozen local newspapers instead of just that one.

Then add either three "###" signs or "-30-" at the bottom of the message. It indicates no more pages / information.
