I didn't know either - here's what I found:

To adorn a garment or assessment with a mockingjay on it is a sign of rebellion to the Capitol — whether or not the wearer means any harm. Not only did the Capitol fail in killing off their own creation, but it turned into something even better than before. The jabberjay mating with a symbol of justice, adds to the rebellion theme.

When will they merge the Hunger Games and the Twilight series?

Maybe throw it all in the mix with some Harry Potter or something?

Now if ya'll want a series to get into as adults, not this juvenile fiction that the masses find so appealing, try George R. R. Martin's 'A Song of Fire and Ice' series, in both book form and on HBO as a TV series (which I haven't seen much of but what I have seen is very true to the books).

Not to give too much away but let's just say main characters have a habit of getting themselves killed off right and left and if there are any happy endings I haven't seen them yet.

yeah, nothing "juvenile fiction" about a series with dragons, giant wolves, sword fights and magic.

WilliamC

It actually reads more like historical fiction, the fantasy part isn't over emphasized, and it's very graphic.

I'm not cultured enough to appreciate good literature, so maybe any Fantasy/SciFy is considered juvenile to those who are ;)

i read the hunger game series of books a few months ago, my wife picked them up when they came out and read them and suggested them to me as well. pretty good series. i think the stories were written as a metaphor to describe the USA within the world.

the story takes place in some distant (not so distant?) future where there was a violent civil war in the united states. the 'winner' was the capital, and is located roughly in the colorado/rocky mountain area. the capital broke the rest of the USA up into districts and fenced them in. the capital trains 'peacekeepers' which are basically a dictatorial military force to keep order in the districts, and to keep them subservient to the capital. each district is required to specialize to produce something the capital needs/consumes, such as seafood, clothing, grain, etc. travel is not permitted between the districts, the only tv broadcasts are from the capital, and everything is very tightly controlled.

as a reminder to the districts not to rebel, the capital implements the 'hunger games'. each year, there is a lottery in each district in which all children between the ages of like 10-18 put their names in a basket and two names are drawn. these two children are sent to the capital to compete in a fight to the death tournament in which the winner is given immunity from future hunger games, a nice home to live in, an allowance, etc.

people who live in the capital are mostly completely ignorant to what goes on in the world around them. the capital government keeps them well fed at the expense of the districts, entertained, and safe from the outside. the similarities between the capital in the story and the USA and where it could go are pretty staggering. the phrase 'panem et circenses' is put to good use there, just like it is now.

Man that's weird. But, at this point, I could imagine that Americans would go for that. We like reality T.V. and American idol and all that garbage. I'm sure some folks would probably volunteer their own children.

But hey, who knows? Maybe one of Ron's grandkids read the books and got him the pin. I'll have to admit, I'm in my 40s and I thought the books were great - you can't ask for a story more solidly pro-liberty, anti-state message.

What's a mockingjay?

From all-knowing Wikipedia: The novel's title, Mockingjay, comes from the hybrid birds that feature in the novels' storyline. Publishers Weekly describes the bird as "the hybrid birds that are an important symbol—of hope and rebellion—throughout the books". Collins likens Katniss to a Mockingjay because both "should never have existed".

That is too cool.

I don't usually go for that kind of thing but who doesn't want to be like Ron Paul?

Check out V3n's link for the flaming version. There is also another, what looks to me like, winning version and a little history from the novel.

The mockingjay pin that Madge Undersee gave Katniss Everdeen was no exception. It originally belonged to Madge's aunt, Maysilee Donner, who died in the 50th Hunger Games. The pin, chosen for Katniss's one token of home, represented everything that the Capitol hated.

I don't think he was saying the picture itself was supposed to portray immaturity or juvenility. I think it was a sort of sarcastic joke to signify how president Bush is viewed as a dumb kid by so many. He did make a lot of faux pas, but I don't doubt that he was really smart in reality.

Pretty much. While I have no doubt G.W. was an intelligent man his verbal gaffs were well known and he had a reputation for being unskilled in reading.

Plus there is the entire fictional aspect of the events surrounding the day the picture was taken, but I'm not going to mention that...
