New Jersey middle school bans hugs

CLIFFWOOD, NJ — It seems it is easier to get the cold shoulder than a warm hug at a New Jersey middle school.

A new rule is stirring up controversy at Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School in Cliffwood, NJ — No hugging.

Principal Tyler Blackmore recently made an announcement during school, essentially saying it is a no-hugging zone.

The kids said they risk detention if they hug each other inside the school.

Parent Deirdre Ring agrees with the new policy. "There was probably some inappropriate physical contact going on that led to this decision," Ring said.

Parents said they got automated phone calls from the principal trying to clarify what he told the students, but some are still annoyed they were not notified in the first place.

School Superintendent David Healy issued a statement supporting the principal.

"Mr. Blackmore is responsible for the safety and well-being of over 900 children ranging from 11 to 14 years in age, and to that end he makes several announcements on a daily basis," Healy said. "In an effort to address some incidents of unsuitable physical interactions between students, Mr. Blackmore made an announcement to his students that they were in a 'no hugging school.'"

As for the publicity surrounding the new rule, Healy said, "It is unfortunate that there are those who find purpose and humor in sensationalizing such a routine school-related issue at the expense and inconvenience of our children and our school community."

Attractive middle schooler?

Anyways, this isn't going to work, because now the kids have to sneak to show their affection, which will heighten the feelings that they are harboring, which you know, might lead to more than just hugs.

In a public school, does the principle have any more right to tell a kid he can't hug, as a mayor telling people in a public park that they can't hold hands? I think not.

Yup, there you have it.

Just more normalizing the police/prison state.

This would have been unheard of when I was going to school, would have been rightly mocked and ridiculed as ridiculous.

Now, it's the norm.

I shudder to think what "the norm" will be in another 35 years.

In an enviroment where people can't be compassionate and hug... fights are almost guaranteed.

Hugging is good for human psychology, people who don't get hugged enough are more like to be sad and even depressed.

There have been several studies on this.

Makes for an interesting discussion on just how many rights a public school district can restrict. Banning hugs seems ridiculous, but can I'm sure everybody can justify them not wanting 8th graders making out in the hallways, no?

Hugging is a gateway action. It leads to making out, which leads to sex which leads to teenage pregnancy and AIDS.

Meh.. as another poster said, if you ban it, then they will just find somewhere private, which will lead to unintended consequences.

If you don't want to watch people make out, then turn your head. If the other kids are watching them make out in a creepy way then they'll probably stop making out in front of everybody. I don't really see what the issue would be.

Well I don't know that public school is the best idea in the world, so I would say private school property owners should draw their own lines and not have to justify it to anybody but those who are paying to attend. But assuming public schools must exist and to be reasonable to parents who we are taking their income by force and then mandating that their child attend school, I guess drawing the line at nudity and going underneath the clothing and touching breasts or genitals is probably a reasonable line... You know, if you're at a party and you are making out with a girl on a couch, at what point does the owner of most couches say, "Hey! Can you please not do that on MY couch?!" (yes, somebody said that to me one time..)

Right, but who makes that decision? If you give the public school districts the authority to regulate PDA, then you can't really say boo to a goose when they place restrictions on hugging. Once the district is granted the authority to regulate PDA then it's pretty much up to their discretion. I think banning hugging is ridiculous. Even kissing, to an extent, is fine and well (so long as students aren't groping or licking eachother). But it really isn't up to me. I think if you're a parent and the ban on hugs is too fascist for you to handle, move to another district or have your kid attend private school. School choice. Probably a better option anyway.

Anyway, just get rid of government schools altogether and give people a real choice.

Well that is certainly a better option than letting the Federal Govt. decide what PDA is, but in the mean time we can still ridicule the ones that make bad decisions.

I think if you're a parent and the ban on hugs is too fascist for you to handle, move to another district or have your kid attend private school.

Or what if you are a parent who doesn't allow your 8th grade daughter to date boys and who wants her to go to a school where they are supervised well and aren't allowed to make-out? I mean, I might not personally agree with their parenting decision because girls who want to are going to find a way, then they will probably rebel and have sex or something, whereas most 8th grade girls (I think) are not making out yet even though they are not prohibited from doing so.

School choice. Probably a better option anyway.

That sums it up.

I suggest a little f'ing common sense. How about instead of banning hugging, they target the specific incidents. If certain students are feeling each other up, why not speak to them directly? Why target everyone? I guess I don't feel like I need to refute anything you've said because I don't think you have said anything of value. Stating that hugging and kissing are the same thing is absurd.
You don't get it. I agree with everything you just said --government is inept at running schools and they're just as bad at making policies like these -- but you're missing the point of my post. Once you grant districts the authority to regulate PDA, they have the authority to regulate hugging, because hugging is a form of PDA. You may think it's ridiculous, but it is what it is.

What happened to

"HUGS NOT DRUGS"

???

This has to violate freedom of speech (expression), freedom of religion, freedom to peacefully assemble, etc. We're talking civil liberties and human rights violations here.

if there were:

"incidents of unsuitable, physical interactions."

then you address the individuals, you let those individuals know what LAWFUL rules they have violated; you don't tell an entire student body that they can't hug one another. Every day another student has a parent diagnosed with cancer, or is dealing with a family divorce, or has a grandparent that died, etc.

hugging is a fundamental human right,

i had to teach my wife how to drive stick in a foreign country with shitty narrow roads with donkeys and goats jaywalking, in a truck without power steering, breaks or windows. she stalled at an intersection and traffic backed up, she started and stalled again, dark foreigners started honking and yelling unknown words in exotic languages, she started and stalled again, she paniced and begged me to switch seats. I told her to relax and imagine she was back home in jersey. she promptly stuck her arm out the window, gave the growing crowd the bird, screamed "fuck off!!!!", started the truck popped it into gear, peeled out and made it all the way home without a problem. good times.

lol, i hate cars with no power steering. last time i was in mexico i borrow my grandma's car which the maid uses. 4 gear manual gearbox, no power steering, and about 40 horsepower. was like driving the crappiest gold cart ever haha

Here's what ya do:

Get Eduardo to ship one over to you. When it arrives, buy a Toyota Prius, remove all badges from Prius and Ford, switch badges. Then switch VIN plates and license plates from Prius to the Ford. No cop will ever be able to tell the difference.

Of course now you've got a useless Prius sitting in your yard--but maybe you could rig it up to be a generator of sorts. Or you could sell off the parts.

I'm a solutions kind of person. You're welcome.

After you sell off the Prius, piece by piece, it should only run ya about $50,000, and isn't the extra $28k worth it to drive around with that "FU US gov't!" attitude? (Not that you don't already, but this adds another layer of "satisfaction.")

Hugging is a form of PDA, as is making out. Where do you draw the line and how do you justify it?

This is one brand of thinking that has strongly contributed to the current state of general dementia in this nation. It smacks of elements such as "zero tolerance", which is newspeak for "zero thinking" and "zero accountability". When I was in school kids hugged each other all the time and on the whole there were no problems. For one thing, most of the girls had enough sense of self respect not to allow a guy to casually grab her ass or what have you. In fact, some of the girls with whom I was familiar may well have decked anyone putting their hands on them uninvited. Add to that the fact that lots of the guys would have had something to say about such a breach of a young lady's space, as it were. Generally speaking, most guys would not have dared such things and the ones who did may have gotten their asses beaten, either by the girl, the guys, or their parents when the got home.

Add to all that the fact that even though most school administrators were already trained to the tao of being assholes, they still exercised personal judgment and avoided these one-size-fits-all, zero tolerance decrees. They took things on a case by case basis and did not go all native on the student body when some kid behaved like an imbecile. That is one of the things that has been relegated to our dusty past in favor of the current childishness that further separates everyone involved from the sense of one's individual rights in favor of an emphasis of tightly regimented authoritarianism beating almost paradoxically against the environment of no personal discipline for students that seems to lead to a state of perpetually suspended development, denying many any real chance at actual adulthood.

Where to draw a line is partly a function of real adults taking in a case of behavior and deciding whether there is a problem. A mutually acceptable/desired hug should merit no attention from anyone. If it progresses into open rutting behavior in the middle of the hallway, then the adult in charge takes appropriate action. This is called responsible use of intelligence and the willingness to stand tall in the wake of one's decisions and not quiver and quake like a pussy when someone challenges a choice.

The nation is become a mass of cowards and imbeciles one thin slice at a time.
