I guess propaganda cartoons were not enough, because it was shortly thereafter that mandatory withholding of income and SS taxes began as a "temporary" war time measure.

Being able to steal your money before you even see it was just too good a deal for Uncle Sucker to pass up.

Yeah, and Road to Serfdom was put in cartoon format by General Motors as well, but obviously never took hold:

Here's a version that does not cut out the vital last 20 seconds or so:

"What used to be an "error" is now a crime against the state.

Thus ends the Road To Serfdom"...in front of a firing squad.

Payroll withholding, brought to you by the establishment's favorite "libertarian" Milton Friedman.

I never knew that is how tax witholding started. I have thought for awhile if there was no witholding on paychecks and everyone had to pay taxes each year on their gross earnings the income tax would NEVER fly. Too many reactionary people out there can't put two and two together. They actually talk about tax refunds as if they are gifts.

If there is just one thing that I wish it would be no income tax. Its just not right. Let me pay taxes on something I elect to purchase or use, not on just earning a living.

If we can catch the deregulation pendulum at the right time, I would think this should be a priority. No responsibility to the employer and the CHOICE of the earner to when he/she pays taxes. From there the whole tax would crumble from public dissent.

If we all wrote checks in April we would receive the support of the ignorant and/or complacent.

There would be a revolution, and TPTB don't want that. That's why it will never come to be by the traditional means.

Awesome, a vital piece of the puzzle was learned by somebody new today.

Posts like that literally make my day.

You are correct, if everybody had to write a check to Uncle Sucker every month or every quarter, you'd see a tax revolt overnight.

There is more to the story, not only was income withholding cooked up to make sure everybody pays, but it also was used as a purely socialist "wage control".

See, with everybody off fighting the war, labor was at a premium and wages rose accordingly. Income withholding was used as a means to confiscate these wage "windfalls", which is why, to this day, if you work for an hourly wage, as you make more overtime or triple time, the tax bite increases exponentially, far beyond what would be a realistic estimation of what your year end gross income would end up being, because you don't work for "triple time" every hour.

This was also the start of company provided "benefits" such as health care and paid vacations.

These were perqs that were offered by companies to attract workers, that fell outside the realm of the confiscatory income withholding rules.

Switzerland does not have withholding, so you get your tax bill in February, have to make most of the payment by the end of March, and then get the final which has to be paid bby the end of September.

Switzerland has lower income taxes than the USA as everybody has to pony up the 10K to 30K Swiss in one chunk.

At least you could make a little off that money through the course of a year, instead having Uncle Sucker hold it all year for nothing.

The other thing is the customary method of payment. They take you annual salary and divide by 13 and that is your monthly payment, and they split the "13th" month between March and December so that gives you a chunk of change in 90 days to make the income tax payment.

I think if the old-school propagandists had complete control of all media and state-run youth indoctrination centers, like today's do, they'd probably have wet themselves.

That's explains why it's weak.

They don't even have to try anymore.

The end of the cartoon where the narrator talks about the justifications of war was especially screwed up: "for freedom of speech, religion, way of life, etc...". When I have kids, there is no way in hell, they will go to public indoctrination centers for this type of "education".

You'll need to keep them away from TV and the internet too. Right now we're being brain washed about bullying.
