Active ‘Patriot’ Groups in the United States in 2011

The Southern Poverty Law Center identified 1274 anti-government “Patriot” groups that were active in 2011. Of these groups, 334 were militias, marked with an asterisk, and the remainder includes “common-law” courts, publishers, ministries and citizens’ groups.

Generally, Patriot groups define themselves as opposed to the “New World Order,” engage in groundless conspiracy theorizing, or advocate or adhere to extreme antigovernment doctrines. Listing here does not imply that the groups themselves advocate or engage in violence or other criminal activities, or are racist.

The list was compiled from field reports, Patriot publications, the Internet, law enforcement sources and news reports. Groups are identified by the city, county or region where they are located.

I didn't even notice this until now! Oathkeepers is also listed. An organization that actually upholds their sworn oath to the Constitution is considered 'extremist'? The SPLC are the real terrorists and I hope they read this!

The Southern Poverty Law Center identified 1274 anti-government “Patriot” groups that were active in 2011. Of these groups, 334 were militias, marked with an asterisk, and the remainder includes “common-law” courts, publishers, ministries and citizens’ groups.

Yeah, what's wrong with that?

Generally, Patriot groups define themselves as opposed to the “New World Order,” engage in groundless conspiracy theorizing, or advocate or adhere to extreme antigovernment doctrines. Listing here does not imply that the groups themselves advocate or engage in violence or other criminal activities, or are racist.

I don't see how that's inaccurate or even condemnation.

The list was compiled from field reports, Patriot publications, the Internet, law enforcement sources and news reports. Groups are identified by the city, county or region where they are located.

Thanks for pointing us to our comrades, now we know where to find our buddies. Nowhere in this does it say "racist, terrorist" or "law enforcement watch out".

I'm proud to be a Ron Paul supporter, an Oath Keeper, a Tenth Amendment Center supporter and many other affiliations with groups that made this list. Heck, I'd be upset if I wasn't on their list. The SPLC is a piece of garbage that supports One World Government. Unfortunately, some people still have respect for them. I can't understand why, but they do. It is a shame really. Folks who like them don't realize they could easily be put on the next SPLC list, as it seems anyone who supports America winds up on the list, eventually.

Telling Tall Tales
Alex Jones, 36

Alex Jones is out to save the world.

From his perch as a radio talk-show host in Austin, Texas, he outlines the forces that threaten to enslave every man, woman and child on the planet. In his narrative, a cabal of wealthy corporations, the United Nations and government leaders are complicit in a fiendish plot to dominate the world.

Or something like that.

He's the host of "The Alex Jones Show," which airs six days a week on more than 60 radio stations and streams live on the Internet. His website is chock full of apocalyptic headlines and ads for products like "recession-proof coins" and manuals on "How to Survive Martial Law in America."

If Jones' ramblings were shaped into a screenplay, the resulting movie would stretch credulity to the breaking point. But Jones, in his booming radio voice, takes to the airwaves to sound the alarm with the earnestness of a true believer.

Jones believes, for example, that the federal government had a hand in terror attacks aimed at swaying American public opinion. "There was government involvement with the Oklahoma City bombing," he said. "There's a lot of evidence with 9/11 being staged."

Jones said the main goal of his show is to expose listeners to the truth. "At my core, I have a drive to expose evil and corruption," he said. "We have a dictatorship on the planet. The entire planet is being enslaved by global, dominant corporations."

Jones ran for a Texas House seat in 2000 as a Republican but said he doesn't follow the platform of either of the two major American political parties. "I'm a freedom lover, and someone who loves the truth."

Notice how no left wing organizations, that have actually destroyed property, or such (Earth Liberation Front) have made the list of "extremist" organizations.

When was the last time ALF, Earth First or eco terrorist struck? But read the title, this was NOT a list of all terrorist groups or property destroyers. No leftist organization claims to be patriot, Constitutionalist, anti-government (well, unless they're left anarchist, communist), they do not fit the criteria of

“common-law” courts, publishers, ministries and citizens’ groups. Patriot groups define themselves as opposed to the “New World Order,” engage in groundless conspiracy theorizing, or advocate or adhere to extreme antigovernment doctrines. That's why CFL was not listed and JBS, Oath Keepers and Alex Jones would be.

That doesn't make them good people, but it's not what this list was about. If SPLC was compiling a list of socialist groups who campaign for vote fraud and lobby for tax hikes, you wouldn't be complaining about them not listing conservative patriot groups. OWS would not be considered a group that uses words like "common law courts", ministries, extreme antigovernment, conspiracy theory, NWO. That's the clear difference. Not only are the groups different, but also their critics see them as different.

It gets even worse, first time I've ever hear of them but SPLCentre seem really vile with a huge statist agenda. They're not scared of dirty gutter tacticts in order to persue that agenda either:

Sheriff of Their Own
Richard Mack, 57

It seems hardly a day goes by without another Mack attack on the evils of the federal government. This one-time sheriff of a rural county in Arizona and present-day icon of the Patriot movement has parlayed his antigovernment ardor into a full-time job doing speaking gigs at county fairgrounds, high school auditoriums and hotel banquet rooms. He even has a sponsor.

Richard Mack is introduced — often to standing ovations — as "Sheriff Mack." His website calls him that too, even though he hasn't been the top cop of Graham County since 1996, when its population was around 30,000.

Mack's mantra is this: The federal government is too big, too corrupt and too oppressive. "The greatest threat we face today is not terrorists; it is our federal government," he warns on his website. Some agencies, including the "Gestapo" Internal Revenue Service, should be eliminated, he says.

Mack has also acted as a key transmitter of such Patriot ideas to Tea Party groups, to whom he now regularly speaks.

He regularly rips undocumented workers and the "socialist" and "Marxist" policies of the Obama Administration. He assures his nearly all-white audiences that neither he nor the Patriot movement is racist (although he did once co-author a book with white separatist Randy Weaver). Had it been his call, Mack would not have made Rosa Parks get off that bus back in 1955, he says. She was merely disobeying a bad law, and cops waste time "enforcing stupid laws all the time."

Mack became a hero of gun-rights advocates after he won a U.S. Supreme Court decision with a few other sheriffs that weakened the Brady gun control bill in the 1990s. Now, he maintains that county sheriffs are the highest legitimate law enforcement authorities — an idea also pushed by the violently anti-Semitic Posse Comitatus in the 1980s — and he relentlessly hawks his latest self-published book, which makes that argument. Its 50 simplistic pages represent "decades of research." Even the president of the United States, Mack tells cheering audiences, "cannot tell your sheriff what to do."

How is "Constitutionalists" equated as anti Government? It is very Pro-Government. Or more accurately Pro-Lawful Government.

As are many of the groups mentioned.

The biggest problem is that these stupid Anti-American traitors are intricately hooked up with governmental and law enforcement establishment. They are the research arm of the Fusion Centers and regularly train police..
Which explains a lot.

They are listing their "intel" reports on groups they oppose. They are listing these groups under 'patriot' (inverted commas is theirs). Their literature constantly labels this 'patriot' movement as racist, violent and extreme.

Look at the way they try to paint Richard "Sheriff" Mack as a white-supremacist.

It's not, they were including both Constitutionalists, and anti-government. It's called being inclusive and not generalizing.

What they do is nothing you can't do, they don't have any insider information, they simply subscribe to newsletters and e-mail lists, or have their people join groups, nothing illegal and nothing the groups wouldn't want done to promote them anyway. None of these groups are secret societies and if any of them engaged in illegal activity, are you saying you wouldn't want law enforcement to know about it? If so, how is that not anti-government?

Oath Keepers is a good example of a group that seeks to work with government locally, but it doesn't change the fact they promote conspiracy theories about globalism and FEMA camps, which makes them listed on this page.

What group listed here is NOT accurately described as such? And no, antigovernment is not bad if you already believe government is bad. Extreme simply means outside of mainstream, or sometimes, outside of reality.

It is not the "list" that is the problem.
It is the fact that this List is taken seriously by people in Power.

They also hate the notorious extremist Gary Franchi.

----------------
The FEMA Fabulist
Gary Franchi, 32

Gary Franchi is one of the leading promoters of a resurgent Patriot conspiracy theory that alleges the government is creating concentration camps for U.S. citizens. In 2009, he produced "Camp FEMA: American Lockdown," a video contending that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is behind the camps that could be used to house political dissenters.

The camps "are on existing military bases now," he said in a February webinar posted on his magazine's website. "It's not a big secret."

He claims that other structures could be converted into camps, including former airport hangars, vacant corporate office buildings, and closed-down prisons. "Your local church may have already signed a deal with the devil," he wrote.

Proponents of non-violence may find themselves at a disadvantage when the government shows up to ferry them to the camps, Franchi said. "If you believe in the 2nd amendment, if you believe in the right to self-defense, then perhaps you will have a different decision to make than the person that will let them kick your door in and drag you out."

Franchi also serves as national director of RestoreTheRepublic.com, whose preoccupations include eliminating the Federal Reserve and the IRS, making it illegal to implant microchips in people (another popular Patriot conspiracy theory that dates back to the 1990s), and ending globalization because it will supposedly lead to one-world government. Franchi asserts the site is attracting nearly 1,000 new members monthly.

He also runs the Patriot social networking site RestoreTheRepublic.net, hosts the weekly "Reality Report" on Freedom.TV, and serves as managing editor of Republic Magazine. In addition, he's now a regular speaker at Patriot conferences, offering a familiar diet of fears of globalist plotters. "There is a global elite structure of bankers and organizations that are pulling the strings of the parties, pulling the strings of the president, the speaker of the House," he said in the webinar.

Though such theories are often promoted by groups that defame Jews, Franchi told theIntelligence Report that his Restore The Republic does not advocate anti-Semitism or racism. "Restore The Republic is not antigovernment in any way, shape or form," he added. "We're pro-Constitution and anti-corruption."

that's the point, they DID NOT SAY they were racist or hate groups, they've learned to be clear and honest this time, but just because SPLC isn't approving their support, people are never happy whatever they say.

Yes they did. They were posting them as part of the 'patriot' movement. They constantly refer to the 'patriot' movement as racist, violent and extremists. They may include a disclaimer to legally cover their backs, but if you just spend 10 mins explorinng that site you'll know exactly what I mean.

Why are you trying to defend this statist society so much?

Here's a tip for anybody who wants to fuck with SPLC, this is completely legal, if you deviate and do something stupid, I can't help you and you deserve what you get.

Think of a funny name for your parody joke group, make a website, and write some crackpot articles. Under Poe's law, unless you show a wink or disclaim that your site is a joke, it's impossible for them (or even your peers) to tell if you are serious. So SPLC will list you, or if they don't, they'll spend hours trying to find out if you're for real. Seriously though, how many of you can think of a better name than "Public Minister of Justice for the Central Assemblies Union of the Several States of the Union of the States of the United States of America.”

If they list you, you can publish on here, or your site "HAHA, SPLC's shoddy research took me for real!" Keep in mind, you might fool some fellow patriots too, and if you tell your members and readers that you're baiting somebody like SPLC, chances are one of them will slip up, because they're working for them. It wouldn't surprise me if some of these groups on the list ARE either jokes or fake government fronts, many are literally internet sites with no real life meeting or activity.

There's only 2 likely outcomes, SPLC changes there tactics and gets serious about researching groups, or you waste their time and have fun. There's nothing illegal about making prank websites, just don't con anybody's money or advocate anybody to do anything stupid.

The issue is that executive officers of the SPLC sit on the DHS advisory panel on homeland security, and the views of the SPLC are reflected in government policy, and more specifically, the SPLC then gets government contracts to conduct training of DHS personnel, further placing the views of the SPLC into government policy.

I would think that any person who believes in civil rights would have an issue with the views of a privte organization being made into governmnetal policy - wouldn't it be great if my enemies were also enemies of the government?

"Freedom Yell" is a group name, not city.

just because I don't share everybody's hatred against them doesn't mean I work for them, I'm not even defending them, I'm defending this particular list as I don't see what's inaccurate about it.

Listen Josh, I know you're probably just trolling here, and getting a good laugh out of it.

But for the benefit of those who don't know, and maybe you, if, in fact you are serious, let me sum up why the list is problematic, OK?

SPLC has a direct line to DHS.

This has been proven and documented many, many times.

Now, that means that government puts a lot of stock in what SPLC calls a "dangerous", "extremist" or "terrorist" group.

It's a pretty good bet that all these, perfectly legal and constitutionally protected organizations will now, or have already been put into a government database and "watch list".

In case you missed it, a few weeks back, the President signed the National Defense Authorization Act (The NDAA) for 2012.

Contained in that legislation is wording that grants the executive branch and the defense department the "right" to detain and punish, up to execution any person it deems as being in "material support" of a terrorist organization.

That includes US citizens.

No judge, no jury, no trial, no bill of rights, no lawyer, no phone call, no due process, no nothing if they so choose.

You become an unperson, just another body in another state's mass grave system.

The people that will become unpersons first will be people with "links to known terrorist or extremist" groups.

The groups that are listed in that SPLC report.

The people that are right here.

Now, besides the egregious affront to liberty, the very idea that government should even be in the business of keeping "watch lists" of it's own people, in a supposedly free society, can you at least see why many people here, including myself, are up in arms over this "report"?

Sure, except the government probably has more money and resources than them, and could easily do their own research.

According to Canadian historian Robert Gellately's analysis of the local offices established, the Gestapo was—for the most part—made up of bureaucrats and clerical workers who depended upon denunciations by citizens for their information. Gellately argued that it was because of the widespread willingness of Germans to inform on each other to the Gestapo that Germany between 1933 and 1945 was a prime example of Panopticism.

Indeed, the Gestapo—at times—was overwhelmed with denunciations and most of its time was spent sorting out the credible from the less credible denunciations.

Many of the local offices were understaffed and overworked, struggling with the paper load caused by so many denunciations. Gellately has also suggested that the Gestapo was "a reactive organization" that "...which was constructed within German society and whose functioning was structurally dependent on the continuing co-operation of German citizens.

So it's really not about the list, or SPLC, it's about the fact the government can abuse their power on people they dislike. So ultimately your problem is with the government and the indifference of innocent civilians. When a government encourages people to point out who's worth watching, do you blame opportunists for stepping up to the food plate?

Government can only abuse its power so far, without the support of the people behind it.

So yes, I do blame the Quislings and opportunists and filthy Vichy for cooperating and "stepping up to the food plate".

I really don't know why you think I'm trolling when I'm telling people to calm down...

Because people are rightly angry about this.

And because most of us understand that it has been "calm indifference" that has gone a long, long way into getting us into this mess.

If there was any sense of moral outrage left in this country, instead fat, dumb apathy, 20 million people would have already stormed DC, like the people of Iceland, or Greece, or Syria, or Egypt or China or ...

Guys, has anyone actually read what the SPLC is or what they do?

The Southern Poverty Law Center is a nonprofit civil rights organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society.

Essentially, they're a non-profit organization, not a government agency or anything like that. Since they're against hate and bigotry however, their constant articles about the "patriot movement" implies that they think the groups listed in the OP's posts are extremists/radicals (not necessarily violent ones). Obviously, they're misguided, but they're no different than any other misguided nonprofit group *cough*GOP*cough*.

Also, the bold didn't carry over, so if you look at the original article, it lists groups in bold and the counties in which they operate underneath it. So if you see something like "Clarke County", it's a county in which the bolded group operates; the county itself is not listed as an extremist organization.

Victor Grey
03-15-2012, 03:32 AM
Guys, has anyone actually read what the SPLC is or what they do?

Yes I've read what the SPLC is, I've read what the SPLC does. It's an organization that once upon a time was interested in bringing justice for people that were beaten to death for being certain colors, or who were lynched up in oak trees.

That isn't what the SPLC is. That is what it was once.

What the SPLC is, is an organization involved in about 30 years of mission creep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_creep) because times
have changed and society has slowly transformed to different norms. There are not quite as many hundreds of people are having their churches burned down or see burning crosses in their yards and such anymore.

What the SPLC does, is desperately seek out to equate and label any, and everything on the politically right that it can, as equivalent to neonazis,
malevolent "archaists", or klansmen. To the point of slander.

Essentially, they're a non-profit organization, not a government agency or anything like that.

They're a group fervently devoted to steering public perceptions toward those they disagree with.

No. The SPLC is not equitable to the GOP or the Democratic party. It's a bad analogy. Some weak aspects of being "misguided" associated between those the two things in
question do not make them the same. They're not on the same level, nor are they equal. No more than comparing and contrast of a high school football
team has similarities to a wedding congregation.

They are still two different entities with huge differences that make them distinct from one another.

Anyway, that takes away from what is important, correctly judging the merits of the SPLC.

I am of course of a fairly negative opinion toward them. I see them as having a political agenda far beyond and honest levelheaded desire to address
racism or unacceptable racist actions.

I am not a member of any private militia, or any of those other organizations listed, or at least I would wager (give it long enough who knows the way
the SPLC keeps creeping up on what is worrisome in their opinion) however, I have heard enough from the people who are over the SPLC.
Bloggers, article from the organization, Mark Potok and his personal appearances.
I don't come away with the assumption they are benign at all. They remind me more of some inquisition for racism than level headed orseeking out
concerns honesty. Chock with their own hubris. Holding standards to the point of absurdity to what is determined as either racist, anti-government,
or dangerous.

I am fully convinced to little doubt, that if they were able to persuade people that I myself were a dangerous racist or extremist that should concern the public at large and thus must be watched, stifled monitors, removed or more, they would seek to do so any time it benefited them or their own political
agendas. With no hesitation.

They ARE political ideologues, and what they are not are benign watchdogs simply looking out to stand against racism.

http://21stcenturywire.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/potok.jpg

Mark Potok is a spokesman and director of publications and information for the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in Montgomery, Alabama, a nonprofit organization that arose from the anti-segregation movement to counter extremism and hate crimes.

He is the editor of quarterly investigative journal Intelligence Report. He has testified before the United States Senate, the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights and in other venues. The son of Joan and Andrew Potok, he grew up in Plainfield, Vermont,[1][2] and studied at University of Chicago (from 1974 to 1978). He spent almost 20 years as reporter at several newspapers, including USA Today, the Dallas Times Herald, and the Miami Herald.

The Intelligence Report received the 2007 Investigative Award part of the UTNE Independent Press Awards.[3]

He has appeared frequently on the Democracy Now! show.[4][5][6][7][8]

You should also check out Morris Dees* (http://www.americanfreepress.net/html/even_with_morris_dees.html), he is REALLY one scankie piece of garbage! Second in line, next to Morris Dees you ought to check out who Mark Potok (http://www.zimbio.com/Mark+Potok) is. This guy is so slimy that snakes run from him!

"Southern Poverty Law Center’s special issue of their magazine “Intelligence Report”– both 2009 and 2010 — claims that although the patriot movement is not racist, its beliefs are still “Hate”. This has everything to do with the classification of certain types of speech as “Hate” speech, under the new “hate crime” laws certain elites want passed."

Hate and Extremism
http://www.splcenter.org/what-we-do/hate-and-extremism

The Southern Poverty Law Center monitors hate groups and other extremists throughout the United States and exposes their activities to law enforcement agencies, the media and the public. We publish our investigative findings online and in the Intelligence Report, our award-winning quarterly journal. We’ve crippled some of the country’s most notorious hate groups by suing them for murders and other violent acts committed by their members.

Currently, there are 1,002 known hate groups operating across the country, including neo-Nazis, Klansmen, white nationalists, neo-Confederates, racist skinheads, black separatists, border vigilantes and others.

This growth in extremism has been aided by mainstream media figures and politicians who have used their platforms to legitimize false propaganda about immigrants and other minorities and spread the kind of paranoid conspiracy theories on which militia groups thrive.

Fighting Hate in Court
In the early 1980s, SPLC co-founder and chief trial counsel Morris Dees pioneered the strategy of using the courts to battle organized, violent hate groups. Since then, we have won numerous large damage awards on behalf of victims of hate group violence. These cases are funded entirely by our supporters; we accept no legal fees from the clients we represent.

Among the groups shut down by crushing jury verdicts in SPLC cases are the White Aryan Resistance, the United Klans of America, the White Patriot Party militia and the Aryan Nations.

These cases have made the SPLC and Dees reviled enemies of the extremist movement. Our headquarters in Montgomery has been the target of numerous plots by extremist groups, including a firebombing that destroyed our offices in 1983. Several dozen people have been sent to prison for plotting against Dees or the SPLC.

Training Law Enforcement
SPLC representatives communicate regularly with law enforcement agencies about extremist activity and conduct in-person training for officers at the local, state and federal level. Thousands of officers have received training that helps them recognize and deal with hate crimes as well as threats posed by extremists. This training is available free to law enforcement agencies.

Yup, They would be a joke, if it wasn't for the fact that they are taken seriously by some very dangerous people.

Just like any rational person would have laughed at the Nazi party, until it acquired power - and then they weren't funny anymore.

I don't know how much more clear it can be made.

"Hah hah, look at those silly men in the goofy brown shirts. Aren't they silly...Oh, wait..."

Now I know you're just trolling.

I just explained why they don't have to say "hate", "fear" on "be on the lookout for".

They pass these names on to government, which accepts them pretty much at face value and government then says "be on the lookout for" and tells its enforcers to "hate" "fear" and be ready to light these people up because they are dangerous "extremists".

And if you can't see the danger of agitating a million man standing army into thinking that every citizen they run across is a dangerous extremist intent on blowing them away at the drop of a hat, then there really isn't any more to talk about.

I don't know about Baldwin in particular, but The Constitution Party terrifies me. I remember on their forums they were talking about death penalty for homosexuality.

2008 Libertarian Party presidential candidate Bob Barr made their list. 2004 Michael Badnarik also made their list.

Why this matters:

In June, 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its 6-3 ruling in the case of Holder v. Humanitarian Law. In that case, the Court upheld the Obama DOJ’s very broad interpretation of the statute that criminalizes the providing of “material support” to groups formally designated by the State Department as Terrorist organizations. The five-judge conservative bloc (along with Justice Stevens) held that pure political speech could be permissibly criminalized as “material support for Terrorism” consistent with the First Amendment if the “advocacy [is] performed in coordination with, or at the direction of, a foreign terrorist organization” (emphasis added). In other words, pure political advocacy in support of a designated Terrorist group could be prosecuted as a felony — punishable with 15 years in prison — if the advocacy is coordinated with that group.

Apparently, only politicians can take money from and speak in behalf of terrorist groups.

Bingo. Anybody associated with even the idea of smaller government is considered a threat by those that thrive on control of others.

just for a show of hands, how many of you, prior to seeing this list, even heard of GOOOH, 3 percenter, PatriotSpace, Rule of Law radio?

I haven't, and I thank them very much for telling me about it now. Where else could I have learned of these names if I wanted to?

I would think quite a few here have heard of these. I know I have.
