Solar Storm hitting today and tomorrow. Think it's best to turn off electronics?

Well, I don't know, but just in case, tell everyone that's a regular FOX viewer, to turn on their TV. :) (are these solar storms such an issue, never heard of such a thing striking Europe... ??)

google solar storm and you can read about the potential problems, including a disruption in communications (read: INTERNET), problems with accessing your cash, power fluctuations, etc. 6 million people in Canada were without power for 9 hours cuz a solar storm caused a transformer to overload.

This was back in 1989.

how about putting this in hot topics or something. has nothing to do with rp.

And check out the Northern Lights if you live in a northern state.

Too bad Jerry Garcia's gone. This would have been a hell of an addition to their light show.

Won't do any good if it's a big one that hits us. Turning off things won't stop them from being fried if it's to happen. It's nature's own version of an EMP and it's not a matter of if but one of when. Folks don't take things like this as serious as they should and I've got news for them. Politics are irrelevant in this regard.

To prevent induced voltages caused by Solar flares or EMP bombs
from damaging your sensitive electronics, first disconnect all the
wiring/cords etc. and then wrap up everything in aluminum foil
bundles.

(Then, hide under your bed.)

Cloud cover damn it.
I was hoping for a nice light show.

NASA announced today it was a dud.

Electronics ended up fine.

One day a big one will hit us, but that day is not today.

May it fry every single satellite that is in orbit spying on us 24/7.

Obtained from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA
NASA models using data from the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) and the Solar Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) have now provided more information about the two Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) associated with the two March 6 flares.

Such a CME could result in a severe geomagnetic storm, causing aurora at low latitudes,
with possible disruption to:

- high frequency radio communication
- global positioning systems (GPS)
- power grids.

The models also predict that the leading edge of the first CME will reach Earth at about 1:25 AM EST on the morning of March 8 (plus or minus 7 hours) and the event may last 3 days.

The first CME is traveling faster than 1300 miles per second; the second more than 1100 miles per second.

NASA's models predict that the CMEs will impact both Earth and Mars, as well as pass by several NASA spacecraft.

2012-03-08 22:11 UTC Geomagnetic Storm in Progress, Solar Radiation Storm Continues

The coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the R3 (Strong) Radio Blackout event from 0024 UTC March 7 (7:24 p.m. EST March 6) arrived at ACE at 1045 UTC today (5:45 a.m. EST March 8). So far the orientation of the magnetic field has been opposite of what is needed to cause the strongest storming. As the event progresses, that field will continue to change. Based on overall strength, the predictions for periods reaching the G3 level look justified. Additionally, the Solar Radiation Storm levels remain above the S3 (Strong) threshold at this time, but are starting to show the first signs of decay. Region 1429 remains potent and subsequent activity is certainly possible. Updates here as conditions warrant.

EXTENDED WARNING: Proton 100MeV Integral Flux above 1pfu expected
Extension to Serial Number: 55
Valid From: 2012 Mar 07 0300 UTC
Now Valid Until: 2012 Mar 09 1200 UTC
Warning Condition: Persistence
Potential Impacts: An enhancement in the energetic portion of the solar radiation spectrum may indicate increased biological risk to astronauts or passengers and crew in high latitude, high altitude flights. Additionally, energetic particles may represent an increased risk to all satellite systems susceptible to single event effects. This information should be used in conjunction with the current Solar Radiation Storm conditions when assessing overall impact.
