This kinda pisses me off. I don't know how I didn't think of this sooner, but it was brought to light in one of my classes today.

Idaho switching from an open primary to a caucus pretty much guaranteed Mitt Romney would win, because there would be no democrat and independent vote.

Here's how it went in 2008 Primary:

Ron Paul got ~29,000 votes.

2012 Caucus:

Ron Paul got ~5,900 votes

See the difference between Caucus and Primary? Heh, gotta love it when the Idaho Governor is protecting his good 'ol Buddy Mitt.

I think Mitt would have been a favorite anyway. Idaho has a large LDS population and they're voting for him simply because he is LDS.

True, but that extra democrat and independent vote could have really helped Paul.

The biggest problem was the voting procedure where you vote in rounds until someone captures more than 50% of the vote or until the final round with two candidates remaining. This hurt us tremendously because Ron Paul is not the second choice for many people.

We can win back all the delegates in Idaho.
2/3rds majority RP delegates at the State Convention. Check out 8:23:

He said IF Ron Paul supporters make up 2/3 majority at the state convention, then they can suspend the rules and award the delegates to whomever they want.

If it was a primary we'd have a much harder time getting delegates. That would be worse.

I wonder if this is the same in other states. I have heard that in Nevada that the state convention could suspend the rules and send the delegation to the RNC unbound instead of proportionally bound to the straw vote.

Could we possibly form an alliance with Santorum/Gingrich supporter delegates to just unbind the delegates, assuming we don't have a full 66%?
