View Full Version : 6 of 9 contests after Super Tuesday will be island contests

This is very interesting as the islands could have very different demographics (hoping for much more anti-war sentiment and less neo-cons). Problem is the islands would be very expensive to campaign in and little will be known about them. All in all...this might be a good thing for Paul. Some islands though are pretty heavily catholic and more nuanced issues like minimum wage are a bigger deal for them...so the campaign will have to pick their message wisely... Believe the anti-war message can actually be among the effective messages for islanders.

Here is the schedule post Super Tuesday:

10th: Kansas (40 delegates)
10th: Guam (9)
10th: Northern Mariana Is. (9)
10th: U.S. Virgin Islands (9)

13th: Alabama (50)
13th: American Samoa (9)
13th: Hawaii (20)
13th: Mississippi (40)

18th: Puerto Rico (23)

Total delegates (if my math holds up): 71 island...130 mainland. So more delegates mainland...but the demographics on the mainland are awful...and just winning a contest on one of these islands could give us momentum. Could be rough stretch for Romney...say Santorum 'staw votes' Kansas and Gingrich Alabama/Mississippi while Paul does well in the islands this could well blunt some momentum Romney probably get out of Super Tuesday.

Anybody know which islands are our best prospects and if Paul will be traveling to any of them?

I'd like to know what the plan is for these places myself.

I disagree that winning any of the outlying territories would create momentum (no matter who wins them), though they are very useful for the delegates, yes, and I'm similarly optimistic we could win them if a strategy is put in place, such as the robocalls done in Washington, or something else.

I don't see how trying to pick up as many delegates as possible is grasping at straws. I don't care where the delegates come from as long as we get them.

Puerto Rico has almost as many delegates as South Carolina did.

I don't think it will get as much attention or prestige, though.

Santorum has organization in Hawaii, and Ron's brother just had or is about to have an event in Waikiki.

I don't know about the others.

Momentum is overrated.

Assuming we're going to a brokered convention we'll need every bargaining chip we can get. If we can say Paul won 2,3,4,5 states then that gives us more legitimacy in trying to sway other delegates to come our way.

"At least we won Guam!"Winning the 'staw' vote for any contest gives you tons of free media coverage...which is free advertising the campaign doesn't have to spend money on.

Besides...the number of delegates I showed are somewhat deceptive. The islands aren't that small...it's just that Kansas, Mississippi and Alabama are that large. Republican rules reward states extra delegates if they have a history of voting of voting republican...that why many southern states have far more delegates than they should. eg Michigan had 30 delegates while Mississippi which has a far smaller population has 40 delegates. The delegate numbers from the islands aren't that bad...

I would be curious if Hawaii is contestable with a grassroots program. There's a good amount of independent people there that are very anti authoritarian.

What about IA, CO, MN, ME, WA, and likely WY? We will most likely win those on delegate counts and according to the RNC taking the "plurality of delegates" is considered a win, not the popular vote.

Momentum is overrated.

Also lets be real, even if we won something the MSM isn't giving us any momentum.

I think focusing on the Islands is important...

Not sure about the momentum straw vote side of things (not sure why so many Paul supporters like grasping at straw votes ;) )
But those are all useful delegates to have and I hope everyone who's able contributes.
There are threads about all the smaller ones that I and others have been bumping for the last several weeks, run a forum search on the name of the location and get the thread to find info on how to help (and while you're there bump it for everyone to see ;) )

on vacation on the Big Island right now, and doing my part by wearing RP tees to the beach ;)

I have seen a few Ron Paul signs and stickers around, and not much else. As we all know, though, that doesn't mean much.

Have the territories EVER been taken seriously? Don't they go to the convention either uncommitted or behind the "frontrunner". Serious question?

We need to trumpet this statement. I like the phrasing of it. Ron Paul IS winning states.
