Puerto Rico's GOP primary is going to be held March 18th. Our territory has 23 delegates to give. Ron Paul supporters have organized voluntarily and, with no budget, been trying to spread the word. We are doing all we can as a non-affiliated group. We have been on some radio shows, tv news and newspaper. We have a very limited capacity to make a large impact. It's disappointing to see no support from the national campaign. Last week was the deadline to register the candidates' delegates. Lucky for us, they let us send the delegate list a day late. If it wasn't for our own initiative and power of will, Ron Paul would have no delegates to represent him in Puerto Rico. Even if he won the primaries, he would have not gotten any delegates! We want to know what are the plans with Puerto Rico and if there are plans for Ron Pal to visit the Island. If it is so, we are willing to make the proper arrangements to get to use conference facilities at universities. Thanks!

Let's start a Voluntary Chip-In.

Thank you for your work there :) It is very difficult for me to motivate relatives who will have no real voice in the general election, plus many are in step with Fortuno throughout the island. Sad stuff. Then again, apathy works in our favor, because our base (even if there's only a dozen of you) will walk all over anyone else's unless they are imported.

How much we talking, which is necessary, in order to win down there?

Is the primary closed to registered Republicans only or is it open to anyone registered to vote?

You need to let us know what you need to win. Resources, money, manpower, etc. We can help but we're not psychics.

This is from Doug Wead's FB Q&A on Feb 22nd:

William Baker
Doug,
Does the campaign have intentions of going after the delegates in Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, Northern Marianna Islands, etc.

Doug Wead: Author, Speaker, Presidential Historian can't say publicly because the enemy is listening in.

I'd throw some money to a chipin for Puerto Rico. That's easy pickings--very low turnout, very good chance of winning.

It's an open primary but we need to sign an affiliation form before voting. If one candidate gets more than 50%, he wins all the delegates. If this doesn't happen, then it will be distributed between all candidates that get 15% or more. Last republican primary was held in the year 2000. The turnout was near 100,000. We expect a turnout similar to that number this year, so if we can get 15,000 votes, we are good.

I'll help chip in what I can. How many RP delegates do you think got on the ballots?

Any amount of money would be very helpful, since we are mostly college students and recent grads.

You need to setup an official donation spot. Like asap. Also, it needs to be credible, so people are more inclined to donate.

Why don't you guys do some coordinating with the people on the Facebook page Puerto Rico for Ron Paul. They have some dedicated posters on there that may be of help. Here's the link: http://www.facebook.com/groups/ronpaulpr/317155605000641/?notif_t=group_activity

Looks like statehood is the top issue.

"We're expecting at least 300,000 people to come out to vote," says John Regis, the Republican Party's finance chairman in Puerto Rico.

Key for Fortuno was Romney's unequivocal support for Puerto Rican statehood.

Other Republicans, including Newt Gingrich, have conditioned their support for Puerto Rican statehood on the territory agreeing to adopt English as its official language. Right now Spanish and English are both official on the island, and the idea that English should take precedence irritates many Puerto Ricans, including. Fortuno.

The answer seems to be no, because our non-affiliated group chose Ron Paul's delegates, the day after the deadline. We could register 19 out of the 20 delegates possible (the other three are already chosen, Two are with Romney, and one with Gingrich). Maybe Doug wasn't aware of the deadline, but it makes me wonder, why is there no afiiliated group here in Puerto Rico? I hope that his silence means a visit to our Island.

What kind of help are you looking for?

Also, Wyoming had its caucuses in February and had ZERO help from the campaign so don't get discouraged if you don't get any assistance from the campaign.

Yeah, we know. Maybe Puerto Rico isn't that attractive for Ron Paul, since it is not a caucus state. We will keep our efforts till the election day.
