From my research the window to run as an Independent is closed in all but four states. He would have to seek the nomination of the LP or CP in order to be on enough ballots nationally. My opinion, based on conversations with local GOP officials that support Paul, is that he will lose a lot of his support from committeemen, local elected officials, etc if he were to do so. While those people may very well vote for him in the general, they are less likely to actively campaign for him if he bolts to the LP or CP.

Party wise,
He needs to stay where he is, and it is where he wants to be.
