They did it before, they'll try again. I'm personally not someone who believes buying gold will be as valuable with this coming event. I believe mobility, defense, weaponry, food, water, tools, and know-how are more beneficial.

What happened to silver prices that last time gold was confiscated? Did it skyrocket, or remain relatively stable?

You can load the charts for various metals here. Look for the historical graph of 1833-1999... you'll notice in all of them they were pretty steady from 1833 to 1930's then there was a small spike. Then after 1971 they all skyrocket....
