The clear choice is Ron Paul, the only one left standing who didn't flip flop.

This past Saturday evening at a Christian Alliance event in Ohio, Rick Santorum took a position on public education that many on the right likely agree with–the notion that public schools should be left to localities,

“Yes, the government can help, but the idea that the federal government should be running schools, frankly much less that the state government should be running schools, is anachronistic.”

Quite a few Republicans have called for the abolition of the wasteful Department of Education, which for some strange reason purchased 27 Remington 12-gauge shotguns. The problem with Santorum’s recent statement is that is doesn’t line up with his actions as a US Senator.

Santorum voted to double the size of the Department of Education during his terms in office and was one of the most ardent proponents of the failing No Child Left Behind Act in the Senate and proudly voted for it. It would appear that “the idea that the federal government should be running schools”, as Santorum puts it, wasn’t “anarchronistic” when he backed NCLB.

He also received some attention back in 2001 for the Santorum Amendment to the No Child Left Behind Act, which encouraged the teaching of creationism in public schools. Thankfully, the amendment was removed after a committee of scientific groups wrote a letter to Congress urging against it.

For someone who now states that the federal government shouldn’t be involved in education, Santorum’s actions would lead voters to believing otherwise. It seems as though he believes in using taxpayer money to reinforce his personal beliefs and inject them into public schools through the power of federal government.
