‘Reduced to…Entertainment’: GOP Considering Major Changes to Presidential Debates

Posted on February 18, 2012 at 8:18am by Madeleine Morgenstern

PHOENIX (AP) — Republican Party leaders are troubled by how debates have been staged for the party’s presidential contenders and are discussing having the party take over control of the events for the 2016 election cycle, a senior member of the Republican National Committee said Friday.

“We‘re very concerned that we really don’t control the topics, the venue, the crowds, nothing,” said Bruce Ash, Arizona‘s national committeeman and chairman of the RNC’s rules committee. “The problem we’re trying to fix is being able to have control over the destiny of our own party and …. how the candidates are introduced to the country.”

Ash said the concerns and the possibility of making changes for 2016 will be discussed by the RNC during an April meeting to be held in Scottsdale, Ariz. The next GOP presidential debate will be Wednesday in Mesa.

“We’re going to discuss the possibility in the next election cycle of a whole new approach to how debates are broadcast, who has the rights, the formats, the venues, everything. There’s a growing desire among Republican committee members to completely take control of the debates in the 2016 election cycle.”

Some party officials feel some debate moderators “have an agenda” that includes ginning up controversy and dissension within the party, Ash said during an interview. “This has been reduced to nothing more, in some cases, to entertainment.”

But of course the RNC Neo-Trots want total control. I have no doubt the RNC will attempt to take control and change the delegate rules of every state by 2016 too.

That's what this sounded like to me as well...CONTROL period.
That's why ALL of us should get involved in county GOP groups -- become the GOP.

they were either criminally stupid or complicit to have allowed things to get this far

Issues should control debates, not committees.

I think the GOP has "fixed" enough already in this election.

This sounds like a further attempt to rig the election of the nominee

I guess they are conceding that Romney will lose to Obama. Lol.

Sounds like they want to control who has permission to grace their presence. Sorry Justin Amash and Chuck Baldwin. You're not "GOP Debate" approved.

I generally agree with much of what the article states. The debates are nothing more than a monkey circus with a bunch of stupid questions that don't get to the heart of any issues.

I disagree that the GOP is competent enough to fix it though. I believe after seeing the mulitude of issues plaguing the GOP primary, the leadership clearly has no right to complain about anything, and certainly shouldn't be given any more power.

For the sake of conversation, if you could make a suggestion for how to improve the format of the debates, what would you submit?

Are they trying to rig the debates so Ron Paul can't be re-elected to his 2nd POTUS term (in 2016)?

The first half dozen debates were more issue oriented. The last half dozen have had zero substance.

-Sit-down, roundtable debate in which the moderator has topics for discussion and the candidates can actually talk back and forth to each other in the conversation, thus increasing the chances of some improv.

more control PERIOD! this isnt the way it should be. if they want less entertainment, maybe the gop should stop fixing elections, stop the infighting, stop the "pushes" for anyone other than a pro liberty candidate and get out of the business of the news media. wait, thats impossible. its all the same.

If only there could be a MASSIVE independent movement in which a new third party went viral and in the next four years got popular enough and enough attention to take control of the national stage and make 2016 the first election in a long time where the people truly have a way out of the two party duopoly. If only such a viral independent protest campaign could ignite without help from the MSM :/ And unfortunately the logical Libertarian Party can't unite enough to tie its own shoes let alone unite the independent movement in this country. The underlying principles behind the movement would need to be just as much or more about the corruption in the system and the fallacy of the left-right paradigm as it would be about actual solutions (which are more likely to divide people whereas hatred of the current system is a uniting force). Obvious the only real solution would be a constitutionalist/libertarian/minarchist/anarcho-capitalist solution, but in order for people to even open their ears to anything new they need to be brought together by mutual hatred of what currently exists and a common ground of disappointment and disgust for the bipartisan corruption. just a rambling thought

I think the debates are pretty unfair they don't give equal time and don't let each candidate answer the same questions. The front runners should not get more time if it is early in the contest or a close contest.
