RAEFORD — A preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School ate three chicken nuggets for lunch Jan. 30 because a state employee told her the lunch her mother packed was not nutritious.
The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the agent who was inspecting all lunch boxes in her More at Four classroom that day.
The Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human Services requires all lunches served in pre-kindergarten programs — including in-home day care centers — to meet USDA guidelines. That means lunches must consist of one serving of meat, one serving of milk, one serving of grain, and two servings of fruit or vegetables, even if the lunches are brought from home.
When home-packed lunches do not include all of the required items, child care providers must supplement them with the missing ones.

When the state has no limits, it will have no limits.
If they can mandate what you give your child for lunch, it won't be long before they claim the right to render you to a foreign nation nation for torture and execution.
Oh, wait...

LOL. Exactly. Let's use some lobbyists to deem a serving of ketchup (Hienz (tm)) to be a serving of vegetable's.

Did anyone notice that this particular lunch met the requirements? Meat - turkey, Dairy - cheese (does it have to be milk?), Grain - sandwich bread, 2 Fruit/Veg - banana, apple juice, (and maybe potato chips).

Im lactose intolerant. A lot of people are. Others are allergic to Peanuts (deathly serious reaction), some Shellfish, others Gluten.
Would these same inspectors force me to buy a School Lunch if they saw that I did not have any Milk (remember, Im lactose intolerant in this example) in my Lunchbag? Require Wheat for those that are Gluten Intolerant or with Celiac Disease? Force Peanuts on those with Peanut Reactions?
Odds are, Probably.

The state has absolutely 0 intrest in vitamin levels. The state does however want to keep the population eating large amount of grain based food due to pressure from big agri lobbyists, this comes as a detriment to our health, research paleolithic diet for more info :)

I think the industry pushes refined grains like those found in cereal and bread-type foods.
I don't think they push whole grains, which I think are good for you.

Although I do like MANY aspects of the paleo diet. The organic/grassfed and those who lean toward fish and gamier meats, pushing lots of veggies and some fruit, etc.. I think the right types of fats can be a good substitution for the right types of carbs, and the wrong types of carbs (sugars, refined grains) can cause health problems. I think too much protein and muscle meat is bad for your digestive tract. Gamier meats seem to have better nutrition.

This. Whole grains are good for you; however, we see too much of this processed grain in fast food and school lunches.

Regardless of what people think of grains (white vs whole wheat, whole grain, etc), the idea that parents can be forced by the govt to feed their children particular things is scary. Think about the number of years (decades) certain foods were vilified (butter, eggs, etc) and margarine and other fake food was brought in and pushed by govt agencies as being 'healthier', and then years down the line they say ooooops that is full of trans fat - don;t eat it! They cannot manage to figure out healthy choices for themselves, and we are supposed to think they can figure it out for our children?? It makes me angry. It goes on up here in Canada too and has been for many years. They will be targeting school lunches soon enough I'm sure.

Surprised no-one has mentioned, What if the child is or is being raised vegetarian? Do the crppy guidelines say anything about that? Or has NC made it defacto illegal to be a vegetarian? I know plenty of veggies that wouldn't put up with that!

This is totally absurd.Even in communism there was no such stupidity. You had 3 choices:
1.Eat what you bring from home
2.Your parents to pay for you to eat cooked food at the schools cafeteria. What they served was pre-established.
3.Some classes parents would make a decision on a PTA for some bakery to deliver something their kids to eat.All would had the same thing ( some form of pastry + yogurt or milk because here the school lunch break is meant for you to have a snack to hold the hunger until you go home to eat so it lasts 20-25 minutes )
It is the same today, but I think that the cafeterias are mostly closed(because every food used to be stew with salads, very healthy but very unpopular ) and replaced by stores and well it would come somewhere between barbecue/fast food .
But the government saying what your kids should eat even in communism would have been found ridiculous.Schools and teachers are there to educate their kids. How their kids feed and how they are being raised is their parents responsibility and problem.Unless their is some clear abuse the schools and the state have no job getting involved.

Ill take it a step further. The school lunch program is a hugely profitable business for the school districts and the contractors like Aramark that supply the products. It won't be long before all students are mandated to buy school cafeteria lunches to maximize the cash inflows for both. It's lobbyists for Aramark and the like that get these sorts of rules passed in the first place.
