"the ballots are non-binding--Minnesota's 40 delegates to the national Republican convention will be decided later"

So when Mitt and Santa are shown to be a bad choice in a few months, they can vote for Paul! Even if the media watching public is fooled right now!

Got to love that!

Northfield Patch: Today, I spoke to Bron Scherer, district chair for Republican District 25 and the secretary-treasurer of the state Republican Party. He said he has received many calls from potential first-time caucus attendees in recent days. He wasn't sure how that would affect attendance numbers in Northfield tonight.

There's some guy on this blog spouting bullshit about voter fraud and conspiracies. NOT the way to approach a public avenue. Tact is sorely lacking in some of us. Time and a place. I'm not going to engage him any longer, don't want to bring attention to it, but I did try.

It's all about viability. Many of us have been saying this. Santorum has won before, Paul has not. He is still an unproven commodity and there are a lot of people that will not vote for a candidate if he has not shown he has the ability to win. While it may be a silly reason, it's the reality of the situation. It's also the reason most Bachmann, Perry and Huntsman are out of it. It is so hard to get people to vote for you when you haven't proven yourself.

Danielle Cabot, Editor: I stopped in to the Lilydale precinct, where resolutions were well underway. I heard one to repeal individual mandate in affordable health care act, and one to remove the definition of marriage from the platform. That provoked another to promote civil unions as an option instead of removing definition of marriage, if I interpreted that correctly. It's a feisty bunch.

I didn't see a big boost with the media honestly. I think it is part viability and part campaigning on his part that is doing this for him tonight. I just know that I am tiring of pouring over poll crosstabs, making calls, etc. It is hard to keep up the energy when all my past experience (25 years of this) is saying that we need to get a win tonight or it will be 10 times harder to do so in MI & AZ, and 20 times harder on Super Tuesday.

James Sanna: "Caucus to our advantage bc the most passionate show up. Most ppl don't even want the caucus system anymore," says Southwest Minneapolis resident Judy Shea, a Ron Paul supporter. She and her son-in-law Chad Weigelt turned out along with many other Sw Mpls Ward 13 Paul supporters. Well-organized, they seem to have swept the selection of delegates. Kris Broberg, former city council candidate and Paul supporter, told me that while the straw poll-which Paul also seems to have won here-is important in picking "who wins," it's the delegates that really count in getting support for Paul at the congressional district and national conventions.

Why we doing so much better in Minnesota compared to Missouri?

No one but Santorum campaigned in Missouri, it is PURELY a straw poll there, they don't even start the delegate selection process after the straw vote as they did in Iowa, and are doing in CO and MN. The caucuses in Missouri for that are in March and it is a completely different GOTV. Santorum threw money and time at Missouri before Gingrich did worse and started shedding votes. Ron went to Maine, but that has real delegate selection effect if you stay after the straw poll and participate. Missouri has nothing. Gingrich isn't even on the ballot but WILL be at the caucus.

But also, the south is more socially conservative in the 'control others' way than the north is.

"Quite a momentous night. The community really comes out on presidential years. Who'd have ever thought that Ron Paul would be here?"

He thought Paul would show strong because of his appearance. "When a candidate shows up, people will turn out," he said. "The people really seemed united."

Limmer said this is one of the best turnouts he's ever seen for a caucus.

"The first time I caucused here it was at the fire station across the street. We met in the upstairs of the fire station. All of us." He laughed and looked around the room. "This was just a corn field."

Ron is doing surprisingly well in MN. I though he was polling last place? I suppose I shouldn't jump to conclusions with only 13% reporting.

Second place was essentially statistically tied between Paul, Romney, and Gingrich in the polls.

Minnesota Patch:
Romney holding steady at about 17 percent, Gingrich at about 12 percent.

Minnesota Patch:
As count rolls in, Ron Paul's percentage climbs steadily upward. He's now at 27.48 percent of the votes. But he's still nowhere close to Rick Santorum's 43.13 percent.

144 people in one precinct? Whole county only has 14k people. That would be like 5.6k people going to convention.

Don't worry the MSM is going to knock him down now to protect Mittens. Now Romney and Gingrich are going to beat up Rick now. Both Romney and Gingrich have such big egos they will stay in until the end. I am seeing the likelihood of a brokered convention even more. Keep in mind Missouri is only a straw poll. Lets get the people out for the caucus and pick up the delegates.

Guys, I hate to say it, but this is good. I WANTED to win Minnesota, but seeing the polls, even overperforming, that would have been a real upset even in my own mind. If we are a solid second it will unfortunately be Santorum Central, but not in Maine, not ever, and that comes next. Remember that Ron was pegged third or fourth going into this.
