NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- A growing number of states are seeking shiny new currencies made of silver and gold.

Worried that the Federal Reserve and the U.S. dollar are on the brink of collapse, lawmakers from 13 states, including Minnesota, Tennessee, Iowa, South Carolina and Georgia, are seeking approval from their state governments to either issue their own alternative currency or explore it as an option. Just three years ago, only three states had similar proposals in place.

"In the event of hyperinflation, depression, or other economic calamity related to the breakdown of the Federal Reserve System ... the State's governmental finances and private economy will be thrown into chaos," said North Carolina Republican Representative Glen Bradley in a currency bill he introduced last year.

As much crap as I give my home state, Coin and Bullion are exempt from state sales tax and some bills at a bank can now be paid with bullion that is a form of recognized currency. It means you can't coin money that does not contain gold or silver, like say containing Nikel or copper but does not contain gold or silver. Not sure about the purity requirement though. The value of the coin will probably be based on the amount of gold and silver content.

In the early United States, Spanish gold and silver coins were in circulation. I believe the intent of "make any thing but gold and silver legal tender" was to allow that practice to continue. I also believe the "coin money; emit bills of credit" was to prevent the states from making there own coins (for whatever reason) or from issuing fiat money (which they did under the articles of confederation). We all know how bad fiat money is. So did the founders, they had just experienced hyperinflation of the continental dollar.
