This fall the New Yorker published the kind of epic 10,000-word profile on Thiel that only the New Yorker can. It revealed a deeply complex character of an interesting political persuasion: Thiel is a faithful Christian and a libertarian-leaning gay conservative from California.
Where does such a person go for a political candidate? Ron Paul, naturally.

Interesting. I wish Peter would buy a small country we could all live in :)

Peter isn't libertarian leaning, he is a libertarian. There's nothing conservative about him.

Eh, true conservatism pretty much IS libertarianism.

Thiel is a RADICAL Libertarian. It's good to have him on the radical team.

How much of the population relates libertarianism with conservatism when the brand of conservatism they are espoused to is Bill Kristol Neo-Conservatism and Religious Right James Dobson Theocracy?

I love his initiative to sponsor students with ideas so they drop from college and pursue business ventures.

He thinks we live in a society where we put too much price on labels and diplomas.

Real, genuine conservatism of the Ron Paul variety is very different than the neocon, israel-first, bullshit filth that the media and politicians push.

Of course we can use conservatism and libertarianism synonymously in respect to US tradition, but it distorts more than clarifies. Trust me. I know this as much as anyone because I lament the fact that the liberal tradition and label was stolen from us by socialists so I try to use liberal as much as possible in friendly company and explain it to those who may not understand, but never as a communicative device.

It`s not even about putting Israel first or not. That`s just empty rhetoric. For eg, Israel would like to attack Iran, at the moment, but administration is preventing them from doing so because Obama doesn`t want high oil price to put economy in recession and kill his re-election chances. Well, it`s Obama this time, but a neocon in charge would do pretty much same thing. Neocon or Obama is basically same thing.

Not that it matters, but I had no idea that Theil was gay.

Which is great by the way because when those newsletter surfaced, Paul was also accused by some ex staffer of being homophobe. This endorsement/big donation flies in the face of that.

That's why I don't push Ron as a "libertarian", but as "the only real conservative in the race", depending on the audience.

But you're right in that the word "conservative" is marred by the hijacking by neocons as the word "liberal" has been hijacked by socialists
