The letter to the editor in the Montgomery Advertiser is by one of my old economics instructors in college. He's an extremely smart man. I was surprised and happy to see his name.

"This is why: The man is synonymous with integrity. A strict constitutionalist, he opposed the Patriot Act, the war in Iraq, expanding the powers of the executive branch and allowing warrantless wire taps. The 10-term (not consecutively) congressman has never voted to raise taxes or for un-balanced budgets.

And, steal our hearts, he refuses to participate in the congressional pension plan, returns some of his office budget to the Treasury every year and has never gone on a government-financed junket."

"As ethical as he is, there are too many issue-driven factors that will hamper his electability. For one, he wants to abolish the Federal Reserve and return to the Gold Standard. Though the Fed enabled the credit crises by keeping rates artificially low for so long, abolishing the central bank is an idea that we would place somewhere between wonky and scary. Also vexing is Paul's opposition to foreign aid, particularly to Israel"

Here's how effective the Fed has been in helping control the value of the dollar.

And yet to abolish this CATASTROPHIC FAILURE, THIS ALBATROSS AROUND THE TAXPAYERS NECK IS WONKY AND SCARY?

Apprently it is better to have someone who supports the fed and Israel than to have an ethical man who wants to protect America and defend our interests. That's the Presidential race in a nutshell. Honesty and integrity take a back seat to the needs of a very small group who do not have America's best interests in the forefront.
