ppppolls: Santorum leading MO primary in our 1st night of polling. Something close to a 3 way tie between Newt, Mitt, Santorum for caucus

Unreal. One debate?!

Important to remember that the Missouri primary will award NO delegates. The caucus that comes later will be where the delegates are allocated, and there's still a long way to go til then. Santorum might not even be in the race by then.

ppppolls: Santorum leading in MO where Newt's not on ballot another reminder of how much both of them staying in helps Romney

I'm confused... if Newt's not on the ballot, how can he be leading there?

It's because Newt isn't on the primary ballot and PPP will not include Newt in their primary poll.

It seems like they are conducting a primary poll and a caucus poll.

Missouri is a really weird electorate. Strongly religious, but also kind of lax in their social laws.

They are doing two polls: one for the primary and one for the caucus.

It wouldn't surprise me if Santorum starts to quickly climb in the polls once Newt implodes. Scary, but in the realm of possibility.

Missouri Primary means zero... Really. 0 delegates are awarded. Newt's not on the ballot.

The caucus is what matters.

It still matters because of momentum. That probably matters even more than winning a few delegates.

yet, missouri doesn't select its delegates via primary, but by caucus. hmmmm.

Missouri is very divided by region. West half of the state is very different than East half, and urban areas very different than rural. It's actually kind of a microcosm of the US, which is why it's so often been a "swing state."

This guy gets it. The straw polls are the most important part because they create the media narrative which creates momentum.

this primary means nothing and i hope the campaign doesn't waste funds on it.

the REAL battle will be in march when they hold their caucus.

The Missouri Republican Party will hold a caucus on March 17th, 2012, which will determine the delegates sent to the 2012 GOP convention

This is huge, Santorum won't make it to super Tuesday, by that time it will be down to just Mitt Vs. Paul.. Looks like we have a lot more work to do here in Missouri but if this many people refuse to vote for Mitt we have a chance at a gang of delegates.

It really plays to our advantage that there is no Democratic primary this time around.

they are just trying to drum up support because he is broke. PPP is up to some shennanigans - they need Frothy in the race. They hope this will give him some push in the money dept.

Word, I've lived in about 4 different regions of the state and they are all very very different.

PPP has done the most honest polling in the entire election. Your conspiracy theory is out of line.

Iowa had a straw poll and caucus. the straw poll was reported as the real result, though it counts for nothing.
I predict, the with Maine having a straw poll like Iowa's election. the media will report the straw poll and not the caucus results. you read it here first.

also, louisiana is the same way, and it has been that way for a century. the primary is declared the deciding vote by the media, but in truth it decides nothing.
we could sweep the delegates in this state and still have the media report some other candidate as the winner.

This is why it's important to finish third in Florida. People are going to continue to vote for Santorum as the anti-establishment candidate until we start beating him. Everyone keeps saying Newt and Rick are going to drop out and it's just going to be a Paul-Romney matchup. Well we better start beating at least Santorum. These polls that have been coming out are depressing, so we really need some strong finishes to keep up momentum.

We beat Santorum in New Hampshire?
We beat Newt in both Iowa AND NH.

I don't know the order of states. Obviously, those in the deep south need more wooing than those in the mountain west, as far as Ron is concerned. I don't know which delegates the campaign is targeting in which states.

Not to worry about Mizzou, we've got a plan to win every delegate here. We did really well last time (although the GOP disqualified enough of us to maintain a non-RP majority at the state convention) and will do 2-3x better this time. The GOP knows we're coming, and we know the sort of tricks they pull. We have an excellent, dedicated, all-volunteer (so far) campaign staff here. Our delegates won't be bound to the winner of the primary this time, either.
