the worst father in the world. Fail the kid by not teaching him better, and then turn him over to the state when he acts out.
fuck you sir.

Father is a sheriff's deputy. Kid was caught committing an assault with a bunch of punks. Father thinks they're being too hard on his son. Father doesn't regret turning his punk kid in.

Devotion to the state trumps filial piety in his mind.

If I was the father,
I'd probably go to the parents of the victims and tell them: You have two options: You can turn my son into the judicial system (which is a joke), or you can allow my son to mow your lawn / clean your gutters / do anything to your heart's content for 6 months (mostly benefiting the victim, because he will no longer have to do these chores). You will A.) get free labor and B.) My son will learn an important lesson far greater than what our flawed judicial system can teach.

If the father didn't, someone else would have. The kid was in a video and could be easily identified. The other kids had masks...
Beyond that, our laws should be based on restitution, not punishment.

ooof... That was FAR beyond THAT
How is punishment not restitution?
Restitution is also punishment, as people wouldn't voluntarily (in most cases) do so. Besides who would want to live in a place where there is no consequence to the illegal use of force?

I wouldnt turn my son in... But I'd imagine he'd rather go to jail than the punishment i would offer him.

I'm not following your argument here.
First you argue that punishment is restitution (totally disagree btw. restitution can be punishment, but punishment might not be restitution)
Second you argue that restitution is punishment (it can be, but might not be)
Third you argue that restitution is 'no consequence' (if it's punishment, how is it no consequence?)
Your premisses contradict each other.
Your conclusion (no consequence to the illegal use of force) does not follow.

If I had a kid who pulled some shit like that I would turn him in to....after I got through with him.
But first off I wouldn't be such a bad father to let my kid be that bad in the first place.
