People make decisions based on perceptions, reality dictates the results of those decisions. The more successful people tend to have perceptions more closely aligned to reality, thus higher quality decisions.

Perception of reality has more to do with your own mind than it does any external influence. The more "successful" people in this particular society typically are willing to do things others are not.
