Today's Afghan war events in google world news. Obama wanted to escalate war and start peace talks with insurgents at same time, does this plan make any sense? How many NATO troops will be killed in Afghanistan under Obama's watch until his Taliban peace talks work? Would war continue for another 10 years if Talibans refused to join peace talks?

Marine tape reaction sets Taliban fighters against commanders
Reuters – 1 hr 20 mins ago

KABUL (Reuters) - Taliban fighters in Afghanistan have been enraged by a video which shows U.S. marines urinating on three corpses, believed to be insurgents, and some say they do not understand their leadership's relatively measured response to the tape.

News of the clip spread fast across Afghanistan, even though only a minority of people have electricity and the internet is restricted to a tiny urban elite.

Radio can reach remote militants and villagers and mobile phones are used by many Afghans, on both sides of the war, for storing and sharing videos even in remote areas with little communications infrastructure.

NATO: 4 Coalition Troops Killed by Afghan Soldier
By MIRWAIS KHAN Associated Press
KABUL, Afghanistan January 20, 2012 (AP)

NATO says an Afghan soldier has shot and killed four coalition troops in eastern Afghanistan.

The coalition said in a statement that the suspected shooter has been apprehended.

No other details, nor the nationalities of the troops killed on Friday, have been released.

Afghan soldiers and policemen have turned on NATO forces in the past, further endangering the countrywide effort to partner the developing Afghan national security force with international troops.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — A NATO helicopter has crashed in southern Afghanistan, killing six members of the international military force, the U.S.-led coalition said Friday.

France Mulls Early Afghanistan Pullout as 4 Killed

By DEB RIECHMANN and SYLVIE CORBET Associated Press
KABUL, Afghanistan January 20, 2012 (AP)

France suspended its training operations in Afghanistan and threatened to withdraw its entire force from the country early, after an Afghan wearing an army uniform shot and killed four French troops Friday and wounded others.

The attack — the second time this month an Afghan soldier has killed French forces — came during a particularly deadly 24 hours for the international military coalition. Six U.S. Marines also died in a helicopter crash late Thursday.

It was the latest in a series of attacks by members of the Afghan security forces, or those dressed in their uniforms, against coalition partners that have raised fears of increased Taliban infiltration of the Afghan police and army as foreign combat forces prepare to withdraw from the country by 2014. The impact of the French suspending training operations is unclear, but it would result in a major setback for the U.S.-led coalition if other troop-contributing nations stopped training Afghan national security forces or decided to pull out earlier than planned.

French officials said the attack happened during a training exercise at a base jointly operated by French and Afghan forces.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the French deaths in Paris and the suspension of training programs.

"NATO" troops?

It'd suck to be killed in action and not even have the media call you a soldier of the country you're serving.

Banning Grandmother of Soldier Killed by Hired Afghan Guard Seeks Change
Army Pfc. Rudy A. Acosta, 19, was cleaning his weapon when he was gunned down by a security contractor in March 2011 in Afghanistan, according to an Army investigation.

By Guy McCarthy Email the author 6:33 pm

But the tragedy was compounded because Rudy was deliberately killed by an Afghan security contractor who was hired to help protect U.S. forces, according to the Army and the Department of Defense.

Such incidents have become a disturbing trend in Afghanistan, with "at least 26 murder/attempted murder incidents by ANSF or ASG members against ISAF/UNAMA members, resulting in the killings of at least 58 Western personnel" since May 2007, according to an unclassified report dated May 2011.

"Most of these incidents have occurred since Oct. 2009, representing 6% of all hostile deaths by ISAF during this period," the author of the report, Jeffrey Bordin, Ph.D., a political and military behavioral scientist, stated in an executive summary. "Such fratricide-murder incidents are no longer isolated; they reflect a growing systemic threat."

French troops killed over US Marine abuse video

Herald Sun January 23, 2012 11:05AM

Security sources say the Afghan soldier who shot dead four French troops says he did it because of a recent video showing US Marines urinating on the dead bodies of Taliban insurgents.

The attack on the unarmed soldiers on Friday at a base in eastern Afghanistan also wounded 15 French troops, eight of them seriously.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy reacted angrily, threatening to pull his forces out of Afghanistan ahead of the 2014 deadline for all US-led coalition combat troops, and dispatched Defence Minister Gerard Longuet to Kabul.
