Policy-wise he is identical to Rand. His demeanor is what I worry about. He speaks and carries himself like a rehearsed politician, he also has some ties to some big banks.

If you consider someone who endorsed Perry "one of us", then yes.

Power is everything to him, clearly.

I asked about him on another forum with a Texas based demographic (pretty evenly split among Rs and Ds). Some of the responses I got:
Anyone vehemently supported by the religious homeschool weirdos definitely does not have my vote.

I forget that Ted's name isn't widely recognized outside of the legal community. As you noted, he used to work under Abbot. Specifically, he was the state's top appellate attorney, so he (and his office) handled all of the state's significant appeals in Texas, federal appellate courts, and the U.S. Supreme Court. I'm pretty sure that Ted has argued more cases before the U.S. Supreme Court than any other Texan (including the late Greg Coleman). He's likable, he speaks well, and he's smart.

While he's conservative, I wouldn't call him just another cog in the machine. Ted is not interchangeable, in that his experience, skills, and reputation cannot easily be replicated. Apart from the generic "conservative" label, I don't know a lot about his specific stances on issues.

Seems like a run of the mill Jesus Freak candidate. He's either an idiot (Jesus Freak himself) or a typical crass politician who has no spine or actual beliefs himself, and/or is just taking advantage of the vast number of idiots that reside and rule in this State. In other words, a typical Cuban scumbag politician.

Ted Cruz is an amazing lawyer and a brilliant guy. He also sounds like a typical tea party wingnut. And I had a Cuban sandwich for lunch. You decide.

He certainly has the ego to be a senator.

When you look at the panoply of idiots, thieves, and hypocrites running for Senate (including, but not limited to, Dewhurst and Leppert), it wouldn't be hard to be the least unattractive option.

I'm just not sure Cruz meets that (very low) barrier.

He worked on Bush's campaign in 2000. I sort of knew him then. He was pretty reserved but smart. I was a little surprised when he was appointed solicitor general since he was young but afaik he did a good job. I'll most likely vote for him. ...

From what I can tell, there is another candidate who is very strongly "one of us", but Ted Cruz looks to be a more viable GOP connected (financed?) candidate.

Actually it was his wife that was the former CFR member. He's called the CFR a "pit of vipers". http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1011/A_pit_of_vipers_also_his_wife.html Of course, that statement could just be damage control.

However, his opponent Dewhurst was in the CIA and is responsible for killing the Texas anti-TSA bill. He's probably done much worse behind the scenes that we don't know about. Right now it looks like Cruz is the only one that can prevent Dewhurst from getting into the U.S. Senate. That said, I really can't say that Cruz is one of us.

He has no Issues page on his website. I've asked him about it on Twitter today, but no response. I hate Dewhurst, but Addison seems good.

My take is that he might be the best running but I don't know if I would go so far as to say 'one of us'. Rand has, I believe, endorsed him out of the choices available, though. De Mint has (long before Rand did).

He seems to be the best one running with a chance.

Addison looks much better. http://www.glennaddison.com/issues

But I don't know that he can win.

Glenn Addison's issue page is awesome, I recommend people visit it. Cruz seems like a panderer.

Take a look on his statement on SOPA: http://www.tedcruz.org/blog/2012/01/18/stop-sopa/

He may not be perfect, but he is the only one that represents most of our views that has a shot of winning. He is endorsed by Rand and that is pretty much gold to me.

Here is another statement on the NDAA: http://www.tedcruz.org/blog/2011/12/02/senator-rand-paul-on-the-defense-of-individual-liberty-and-the-constitution/

I don't see how he can't be our type of guy.

Addison is better but he simply doesn't have a chance.
