SOPA in the House and PIPA in the Senate.

My thought is that people could plus rep people who did that. Since I'm starting it, I'll be the exception to that (too self serving), but I did email my Rep and Senators.

Post below if you do!

find your rep here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Emailing at this point may not get to their eyes in time. But, it never hurts to do both.

Done a while back. Got a letter back from Dean Heller (NV) that said he supports it and thinks it will protect the internet and curb online piracy.

I plan on contacting them all again now that it has gotten so much attention.

Blumenthal had bad topics to pick from in the contact form so I filed it under schools:

"Senator Blumental,

As you may know, learning in the 21st century is highly dependent on the Internet. Please oppose PIPA so our children can grow up with access to the free Internet."

Although I realize physical mail is more affective than email...

Used the ACLU one, though I had minor concerns about the fixed text attached at the bottom of their boilerplate message.

I changed the original message to the following:

As a constituent who is a U.S. Patent Agent and also holds a graduate degree in electronics engineering, I want to express my deep concern with this legislation. Although protection of copyrighted material both online and offline is important to encouraging artists (like inventors) to keep producing new forms of expression, the language of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is severely flawed and will not only lead to the takedown of lawful content, but may cripple the Internet entirely, which would be bad for business, as well as harm freedom of speech, which is protected under the Constitution.

SOPA eliminates the concept of sites 'dedicated to infringing activity' and enables law enforcement to target all sites that contain some infringing content, no matter how trivial, and those that 'facilitate' infringing content. The potential for impact on non-infringing content is immense. Sites with user-generated content, like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, would be especially vulnerable, as one small piece of infringing content could lead to blocking the entire site.

Congress should focus not just on the goal of protecting copyright owners, but also protecting the speech rights of consumers and providers who are reading and producing wholly non-infringing content.

I dont have a representative or senator because I don't live in the US. But I've already sent about 50 emails to representatives. I did the same thing with the audit the fed push in 2010 (I think it was that year) where I emailed/faxed every single member of congress at least once. I'll do the same with SOPA

I have written numerous letters to Boxer and Fienstien. These bills have been lurking around for 6 months. i just finally got a response from Boxer, it is a standard mailout:

Dear Mr. Keisling:

Thank you for taking the time to write and share your views with me. Your comments will help me continue to represent you and other Californians to the best of my ability. Be assured that I will keep your views in mind as the Senate considers legislation on this or similar issues.

If you would like additional information about my work in the U.S. Senate, I invite you to visit my website, http://boxer.senate.gov. From this site, you can send a message to me about current events or pending legislation, access my statements and press releases, request copies of legislation and government reports, and receive detailed information about the many services that I am privileged to provide for my constituents. You may also wish to visit http://thomas.loc.gov to track current and past federal legislation.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I appreciate hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Subject: SOPA internet censorship

I support the first amendment. I am horrified that members of Congress would seriously consider SOPA and PIPA. The unconstitutionality of such prior restraint is long settled and was reaffirmed by the Pentagon Papers case. If you intend to keep your oath of office to protect the Constitution, then you must vote against this legislation. If you do not intend to keep your oath, then please resign.

No "tipping point" was reached when 95+% of callers to Capitol Hill were against the bailouts.

Yes it was. That is how we killed it on the first vote and the whips had to go to work overtime, and give huge concessions to get votes, because of the risk, and then we threw people out at midterms, and the TARP vote is a scarlet letter, forever. That is how it is done.

Dear Senator Ayotte:

On behalf of what is no doubt a large group of Granite Staters, many of whom are and have long been pioneers in the development of the Internet and associated technologies that provide jobs and promote free exchange of ideas daily, I ask you to reconsider your support of PIPA. While guarding against online copyright infringement is a worthy endeavor, the bill's overly broad language provides the federal government too great an opportunity to stifle free expression and stunt the kinds of innovations that have made the Internet industry the generator of 15% of our country's GDP in the last decade.

I enthusiastically supported your election, giving money and time to your campaign and working to convince others to give you their vote instead of Rep. Hodes, no small task considering I work in traditionally liberal academia. However, a vote to pass PIPA, coupled with your support of the NDAA, guarantees my money and efforts will go toward supporting your opponent in 2016. With candidates for office losing elections by razor thin margins in recent years, this is no small matter.

Thank you for your consideration.

I just had a pleasant conversation calling the offices of my Rep and two Senators. I've already forgotten their specific positions on things but I Marco Rubio seemed the worst in supporting the provisions in NDAA. Bill Nelson seemed the best, opposing the provisions of NDAA and also PIPA. From my calling today the conversations all lasted about 3.5 minutes each (was on hold at Bill Nelson office once the busy signal ended).

I called my senators and it wasn't easy. Senator Inhofe's public website is down and the phone goes to mailbox full. I sent faxes that took an hour to connect. Finally got through to both Senators. Senator Tom Coburn's office said they weren't sure and the Senator is wanting some language changed. Senator Inhofe supports SOPA. Senator Coburn's FB wall is immediately cleaned of any reference to SOPA/PIPA and Senator Inhofe's wall is covered with anti-SOPA messages, but since they are both getting so much money, I am counting on internet censorship very soon.

2 birds with one stone.

We are voters within your district. We are writing to express our concern with PIPA (SOPA). The idea of federal government controlling the flow of free information on the internet in any way is a troubling thought. Historically, governments that trend towards the control of information have left a tyrannical stain on humanity. There are plenty of laws that prohibit copyright infringement and punish against it. Please do what voters in your district want and expect, by avoiding government control of information and keeping our federal government constrained to the limited sphere that ensures freedom. Please oppose any passage of PIPA (and SOPA if it ever passes the house).
Additionally, we are very concerned at the passage of NDAA because of the possibility it presents for the executive branch to supersede the judicial authority.
Due process is a vital protection against despotism. Although President Obama promises he will not use it, there is no guaranty that an oppressive executive will not determine to pursue a personal agenda by using it in the future. Freedom should never be subject to the whims of a single entity. We strongly request that you diligently seek the reversal of this horrible usurpation of power.
We will be watching your actions on these issues and will be vocal amongst our voting friends concerning your stands on them.
Please carefully seek to protect our Constitutional freedoms in all your future votes.
Thank you,

Im no fan of SOPA/PIPA but if it were signed, it would be another check in our column. :)

But people need to be reminded that even if it is shelved for now, make no mistake about it, that it will be singed into law AFTER the election UNLESS Dr. Pail is the POTUS.

This is true. Although these bills are at the forefront right now they have already been up for a vote before and have been lurking in both houses for like 6 months. I believe Senator Leahey was one of the first to introduce. This is not going to go away anytime soon, and we will have to continue to put pressure on our reps, I have written 10 letters since I first heard about these bills and as I told my reps. I will be tireless in my attempts as a citizen to see these squashed. This is only the start of this fight.

Nunnelee's FB response:

Americans are rightly passionate about internet freedom and protection of private property. We need to be vigilant in preserving a vibrant online economy and I am a supporter of a free and open internet. We must also give our law enforcement agencies the tools they need to protect American private property. It would be an outrage if a thief could come into your house, steal all of your belongings... and then sell them on the internet with no legal way to stop it. That is happening every day on the internet as American products, technology, and intellectual property are being stolen by foreign websites and then sold on the black market. If a government cannot protect its citizens’ property from being systematically stolen from them by foreign groups, the government is not much good.

I am pleased Chairman Smith has decided to drop the most contentious provision of SOPA that would have required ISPs to block infringing websites through a process known as Domain Name System filtering. This is a big step in the right direction and will help foster a consensus piece of legislation that all sides can agree on.

via the magic of the interwebs i composed (cut and pasted) this for my "congress people."

Conressman Reichert,

Subject: SOPA internet censorship

On behalf of numerous constituents in my precinct located within walking distance of Microsoft, we support the first amendment. We are horrified that members of Congress would seriously consider SOPA and PIPA. The unconstitutionality of such prior restraint is long settled and was reaffirmed by the Pentagon Papers case. If you intend to keep your oath of office to protect the Constitution, then you must vote against this legislation.

As you may know, learning in the 21st century is highly dependent on the Internet. Please oppose SOPA so our children can grow up with access to the free Internet.

Sincerely,
me
PCO

being an elected PCO never seems to carry much weight here.... my congressman never ever sends a response. Cantwell does respond and it is just about always is the usual canned response, but Murray - who's site was down a few moments ago - does not respond either. perhaps they tweet of facebook or some crap i still refuse to acknowledge, but a simple response to an issue such as pipa/sopa or ndaa, or a request to cosponsor an audit the fed bill doesn't seem to be asking that much...

I just emailed my two Texas senators and my congressman Kevin Brady. Cornyn came out today against PIPA, although in a weaselly kind of way. He's saying that it needs to be withdrawn until there can be more discussion of the controversial parts of it. I thanked him for this but also asked him not to later come out in support of a watered-down PIPA that would still censor the Internet and further weaken our rights to due process. I let him know that I was already considering voting for his opponent, whether in a primary or the general election, due to his vote in favor of NDAA.

I don't hold out much hope for Kay Bailey Hutchinson since she is retiring. I'm not sure where Kevin Brady stands on this. If I don't get an email back from him, I may call his office tomorrow.

I just went with the simple: "My name is…I am a constituent of [representative]. Today, I am calling to request that [representative] vote NO on [legislation] because it imposes tighter controls on the Internet."

I figure the technical reasons do not matter; the office staff probably just tabulates the, "yes" requests and the, "no" requests, applies a multiplier based on the population of the represented area, and forwards the info to the elected official.

Dear Mr. Carr:

Thank you for taking the time to contact me. I appreciate hearing your concerns on this important issue.

Online distribution has become a way of life for business and individuals. It has made access to information and products easier, faster, and cheaper than ever before. While I fully support the internet's ability to facilitate economic growth and innovation, I have concerns about those who take advantage of this easily accessible method of distribution. For example, there have been cases of fake pharmaceuticals being sold, threatening people's lives, in addition to the sale of pirated movies, music, and other entertainment products that have threatened the ability of small businesses to compete in the global marketplace. S. 968, the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property (PROTECT IP) Act of 2011, is aimed at targeting the most egregious websites and individuals and is an important first step to putting a stop to online piracy and sale of counterfeit goods. I believe the American consumer should be protected from online infringement, especially actions that could possible harm their lives. This bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary where it awaits consideration, but I will keep your views in mind should it come to the House for a vote.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. Please do not hesitate to contact me on this issue or any issue of your concern.

Sincerely,
Rosa L. DeLauro

Just received the following email from Walter Jones, please +rep:

Dear Dr. _:

Thank you for reaching out to me about H.R. 3261 – The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). I appreciate you taking the time to contact me and I am happy to respond.

I share your concerns with the SOPA Act, and I strongly oppose it. The bill would authorize the U.S. Attorney General to take legal action against an "Internet site dedicated to infringing activities." SOPA would require the federal government to block websites that are simply accused of copyright infringement, in effect labeling these sites "guilty until proven innocent", with a complicated and expensive appeals process to be proven innocent. The definition is so broad that it could shut down well meaning sites due to a single item being sold on e-Bay, or a single post on Facebook, etc.

Our founding fathers warned us about the slippery slope of government control. SOPA would give the federal government far reaching powers to regulate the internet, powers which it does not need and should not have. SOPA would also stifle innovation and hurt the many jobs that come from the internet. These outcomes are unacceptable, and that is why I oppose this legislation.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Walter B. Jones

I tried to help get him primaried, but he's a banker, and a PE guy now too though some business investment. just emailed my congressional district representative
As a constituent of your district, I urge you to vote NO against the Stop Online Piracy Act. The title of the bill sounds harmless but allows the federal government to have too much control over the internet. This bill as you should know, would allow the government to take down major sites, such as YouTube or Facebook if just one user posts pirated content. I strongly agree piracy is a crime that we must fight but I do not agree with the authority this bill grants the federal government.

Benjamin Franklin was once quoted in saying "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." I agree with Mr. Franklin in that we must not give up our liberty to be free on the internet to only gain temporary security for few. Please reread and understand what this bill would allow and the negative effects this bill would cause if it is voted and signed into law

Now I just hope he actually reads his emails...
