If I'm not mistaken, about 25% of homeless in the land of the free aka US are war heroes/veterans. Lip service aside, what is practical stance of "support the troops" folks on helping the homeless in America? This topic is almost unheard of even among neocon circles.

I fear Fox or CNN will raise this question at next GOP debate.

I am not pro war , but do support the troops . Homeless among veterans , I imagine would be like the other groups . Difficult to improve because the majority would prefer to stay the way they are. Some will say due to mental illness . I dunno about that . I am not qualified to make that determination . Most of the mentally ill I have been exposed to are employed and not homeless.

Most low income veterans can see a specialist through the VA for $50 , a dr. for $15 and prescriptions for thirty days supply , less than $10 . If they have been wounded , previous spine , head injuries , costs are waved . All they have to do is fill out the form , mail it in and it will be approved. Not sure if most homeless veterans are interested in seeing someone , cannot say I blame them , I would likely not be interested in taking any of the meds they might prescribe .

The one thing I would like to know , and really have no idea , is , how many of these people have families that have tried to help them ? My thought , is , that if they will not accept guidance from loved ones , they surely are not going to take it from others.

Probably about ten percent of the US population over 18 are veterans , probably one percent have been through extraordinary circumstances.

I don't think there is any conspiracy to avoid discussion of the issue. There is some discussion on the issue here (http://www.factcheck.org/2011/04/dems-gop-fight-over-homeless-vets/). On the numbers, a biased source says 33% (http://www.nchv.org/background.cfm), but VA/HUD report says 16% (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/04/01/report-finds-veterans-make-high-number-homeless/).

So , if the homeless percentage is higher than that for veterans ..... How do you count the homeless ? In my State , County , they do try to count them . In my County though , I doubt they really know where to look to find them....

So really about proportional to the general population ?

Neocons would no doubt tell them to "get a job, hippie." Ya think ? I dunno , homeless vets are probably not much drain on the system and are probably using very little govt funded resources ?

Slightly more. I thought the article said 10% of the population are veterans.

This would make it about 7% - the draft ended 40 years ago. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/veteranscensus1.html

The way to get to them is to ask them whether they want Social Security or do they want more wars.

They will choose Social Security.

I guarantee you.

It has to be made personal.

Santorum apparently has a less than stellar record:

Virtually none of these homeless vets would have been commissioned officers . So what you really have are low ranking enlisted guys , mostly from the South , West ,Midwest where the majority of these guys would come from lower than median income backgrounds in states where the economies are trashed , mnfg . , construction etc.....

I don't know but my guess is through data interpolation/statistical sampling same way election polling is done except without phone calls?

I don't know but my guess is through data interpolation/statistical sampling same way election polling is done except without phone calls? I see some homeless on occasion in Indianapolis . I have never tried it , but I am pretty sure there are a couple of guys who hang out near the parking garages near the Slippery Noodle , that if I asked them if they were Mary Poppins , probably say yes , if I asked them if they were General Patton , probably say yes. So , I am pretty sure if someone asked them if they were a vet , they would say , yes......

Clearly 75% of them said "no" or media would have reported that 100% of homeless are veterans.

But I would think professional pollsters / social scientists are trained to analyse/validate data they collect and demographic they interview..

I do not believe it.

I do. I have lived in the street, and known many Vets among the folks there.
