Take the Quiz

Monday, January 16th, 2012

Here’s a little visual quiz I put together to illustrate the way cops and soldiers are increasingly difficult to tell apart. There are 21 images. All police photos are from domestic U.S. police agencies. A couple of the “soldier” photos are from foreign military. I blurred or blacked out insignias that would give away the answer.

A tweet from Radley Balko, author of The Agitator site mentioned in the OP, puts this into historical perspective for those too young to remember.

Blog commenter on the "Cop or Soldier" quiz: "When I was a kid, the tough one was telling cops and postmen apart."

I scored 13 of 21.

Soldiers have different facial expressions than cops. That is, when they aren't covering up.

Nope. That guy holds himself like he knows what he's doing. The other one is clearly overly-armed and under-trained police.

I see fear in what isn't covered of that first guys face. I see somebody who will pull his trigger when a situation scares him.

The guy behind him strikes me as a desk guy who got loaded up and sent off into a world in which he doesn't belong and would rather not be there ... but won't stand up and say "this is all wrong."

I see a whole team who's potential 'group think mentality' makes me worry for innocents who happen to cross their path.

I was more or less steering in the direction of him being in a military hummer. Why would police need such a thing?

I learned that cops try to be like the soldiers, but tend to hides their faces more.

Most of the time it was pretty easy. 18/21

Guys without camo hood on their helmet or lots of black stuff = Cops
Also all the Black painted armoured vehicles are quite easy to assign to the 'cop' cathegory.

Pretty scary though.

I don't think this is very accurate. Since when do law enforcement get issued Multi-Cam and carry AT-4's and Mil-surp ammo in the can?

The AR's I can see, but Class 3 DD's? The Police Armory in my town doesn't even get issued kit like that. Where are they issuing that sort of stuff?

This is not accurate though. I saw Direct Action forces and ODA's wearing the same Mitches we wore without the covers all the time. Now they wear a different style helmet than the Regular Army guys, but their kit is often of solid color, because they buy their own with the stipend given to them pre-deployment. Their unit SOP determines the markings and coloration.

In Iraq it was common to see them wearing the scarves and all black kit so as to appear like contractor to the populace rather than Military. The US Military was the preferred target of the attacks in Iraq.

In Afghanistan they would wear civvies a lot of the time and carried primarily all Yote Tan gear or Flat Dark Earth gear.

Meh, not too bad... oh now, wait, it is bad. I should be able to tell a cop from a damn soldier. I suppose it makes sense, they're pretty much one and the same.

Except for Mexico - the Army SF and Navy Marines do that.

Here in Wilkes the security forces have had a 113 (apc) for a few years. Just a couple of weeks ago they got a 577 (apc but more of a command vehicle). They are gearing up.

I hope they're getting the A3 models. Moving the fuel tanks to the outside gives me more room to store my gear inside.
