I don't think I have ever run into an association quite like these folks!

I am an Army Vet and as anyone who has dealt with the federal government can tell you, it's a lot of work and very dysfunctional. The good thing is that there many organizations that can help you out, especially if you run into problems. I had a friend who lost his arm in Afghanistan, so when the VA was dragging their feet living up to their obligations to help him, he went to the DAV and they helped him get set up. They know the bueracracy and the ins and outs.

So when my college had what they called a Vet rep show up, I thought cool. Little did I know that this organization was about as far from a pro-vet organization as a group could be!

I went to speak to him (he was a student like myself) I found out that they are this outcropping of americorps, with the goal of getting Vets into Americorps programs. All of the services they supposedly offer don't actually exist, they are just pointing you to Federal programs they have nothing to do with. It sort of ends up being like a cult they talk to you about how you can get benefits in terms of money, and this guy actually descended into telling me how to defraud the VA!

He basically said I should just claim medical injuries and to say I have something like a ringing in my ears, due to the fact it can't be disproven. He would help me out with putting that together...

Long story short, he basically spent our meeting time promoting the Obama admin and various far left causes. Americorps has a long history of interfering in politics. In my home town, Americorps volunteers would be placed in far left political groups.

All that Vetvorps seems to be is some sort of deceptive middle man, luring Unknowing Vets into the uber state.

Another thing that irked me was that it seemed kind of racist. I'm a dark skinned white (mom is from Italy, dad is American) so he took this "esse bro" stance with me thinking I was Hispanic or something, he handed me a bunch of flyers to organizations that he said helped Vets. One from National Council Of La Raza, another from MeCha.

This organization is nothing more than a front for far left possession of Vets, steer clear. Just go to the VA.

Some time ago, I concluded that most government programs are really designed to help the helpers, not the target of the "help".

Yes, very true.

Sorry OP for your experience.

Sadly many politicians want more and more of us dependent on the government services so we see them as "good" and necessary.

All government benefits are necessarily stolen from another as the gov has no resources of its own.

Don't steal, the government hates competition

It really is a democratic outfit.

On April 21, 2009, President Barack Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act in Washington DC. This legislation reauthorizes and expands national service programs administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service by amending the National and Community Service Act of 1990 (NCSA) and the Domestic Volunteer Service Act of 1973 (DVSA). It also created a separate Veteran’s Corps designed to help veterans meet the needs of their fellow servicemen and women.

Yeah, it really seemed to try and take advantage of Vets and push them towards authoritarian collectivist "charities."

I looked up that organization I was referred to called MeCha, and I can't for the life of me see how it has anything to do with Vets. It was like a Hispanic KKK!

I can see, at least theoretically, the existence of the VA and ancillary organizations like DAV or the Purple Heart Society. The VA exists to fulfill the contractual obligation the government has with the military. We'll take care of you if you get hurt. Although I do think the VA would function better if it were like an insurance company that allowed you to go to your own Doc, save for areas that it excels in.

In terms of opinions and points of view, every Vet organization seems to be: "if you have met one Veteran, then in fact you met one Veteran." Vetcorps seems to want to violate this and push vulnerable Vets into extremist causes under the guise of help. It 's like having a socialist help you take your email to the mailbox, while on the way putting your correspondence in a red envelope addressed to them.
