View Full Version : PPP NC Poll (01/05-01/08)

Conducted 01/05-01/08 (BEFORE NH primary) of 555 usual NC Republican primary voters
: Newt 25%, Santorum 24%, Romney 22%, Paul 9%

Gingrich 25%
Santorum 24%
Romney 22%
Paul 9%
Perry 4%
Huntsman 4%
Roemer 1%

PPP's newest poll on the Republican Presidential race in North Carolina essentially finds a three way tie: Newt Gingrich is at 25% with Rick Santorum at 24% and Mitt Romney at 22%. No one else is in double digits- Ron Paul at 9%, Rick Perry and Jon Huntsman at 4%, and Buddy Roemer at 1% round out the field.

The North Carolina numbers back up the national trends. Gingrich's support is down 26 points from a month ago when he was at 51%. His net favorability has declined 43 points from +56 (73/17) to just +13 (48/35). Santorum meanwhile has seen a wave of momentum following his near win in Iowa, increasing his support from 3% to 24% over the last five weeks. His 62/22 favorability rating makes him the most popular of the Republican candidates in the state. Romney has momentum as well, increasing his support from 14% to 22%, perhaps reflecting a growing sense of inevitability about his nomination.

The North Carolina numbers are really indicative of the fact that Romney probably can't be stopped unless some more of the candidates drop out. If they had to choose just between Romney and Santorum, Santorum wins 51-33. That's because Gingrich voters prefer Santorum 67-27 and Perry voters do by a 59-35 margin. If Gingrich and Perry left the race Santorum would really get some momentum in states like North and South Carolina. But as long as they're splitting the anti-Romney vote three ways it puts Romney in a very good position to just keep on winning.

No one else does as well as Santorum in a head to head against Romney. Gingrich leads him only 43-42, and Perry trails Romney by a 52-35 spread. If I had to guess the most likely scenario by the time North Carolina comes around is that it will be just Romney and Paul in the race, and Romney takes that one 67-21.

Paul is basically despised in North Carolina despite graduating from Duke Medical school. Favorability: 29/56

This doesn't surprise me, but NC doesn't even vote until May. It'll be a completely different race by then.

This is definitely old news. NH changed things, I'd imagine.

PPP is located in NC, I think.

Otherwise, polling NC makes no sense

They polled if the field was just Romney and Paul and:

Romney 67%
Paul 21%

Hopefully last night would have changed that a good deal.

Yes, they are located in NC, which is why they poll NC every month.

What is the point of making this not relevent poll a thread? We are likely to have a whole lot of new interest following NH and making a bunch of terrible headlines on a Major RP site is not going to be helpful.

Yea, wtf, who cares about NC right now? God, people are fing lost, unreal gingrich was at 51% back then, do people even bother looking at a damn candidate's history in the slightest way? Really makes me get this vision of all voters in NC and SC looking like the 'bad guys' in that terrible b-movie, Wrong Turn (except Bluesc and other SC'ers here Lol) Sorry, but damn that is just horrible for a man that has to be one of the biggest enemies of this country. With numbers like that, may as well make the guy a king

On the bright side, atleast Romney isn't leading. We need Gingrich to torpedo Romney.

Edit: nvm I thought this was SC

Funny, I'm signed up to participate in all of these polls, and I live in NC. I didn't take any poll from PPP.

North Carolina has their primary on May 8th. That is May. Thirty-eight, 38, states and territories have their primary or caucus before North Carolina.

Wow, that is an absolute annihilation that Romney and Santorum puts on us 1 v 1. How can we say we want to go 1 v 1?

Those numbers aren't just bad, they are god awful.

It's in one of our worst states, and the poll was taken before we took second in New Hampshire. Romney voters are concerned about "electability" more than anything else, so the better we do and more popular we become, the better we'll start polling. I'm certain our numbers there have already improved.

This is North Carolina not South Carolina.... Chickenhawk and Frothy will be the hell out of there by then

It is irrelevant at this time. We have A LOT of time to build on these numbers. :)

Those numbers don't make me feel good about South Carolina. North Carolina is part of the Bible belt, like South Carolina, and I'm afraid the Evangelicals will give this away to Romney splitting the vote between Gingrich and Frothy.

South Carolina votes on Jan. 21st. North Carolina votes on May 8th. There are 37 states/territories that vote between these two contests. It is too far out to make predictions at this point.

I have literally the only presidential campaign signs Ive ever seen in an NC yard. The local media isn't talking about the race at all, other than the occasional blip about an SC visit by this candidate or that one. NC polls are pointless right now. On a positive note, since last night's NH finish Ive talked to several people here that want to help with the SC effort and will definitely be involved when NC's primary comes around. It'll likely be Ron vs. Mitt by then anyway.
