Good Day All:

My name is John Kurr and for $72 for a six month start-up fee I became the Organizer of the Des Moines Area & Central Iowa Ron Paul 2008 Support Group.

To cut to the chase, I, along with everybody in my group knows Iowa is important. Yes, we have a clear chance to strike out of the blue at the straw poll; we don't want to come in second we want to win. But, as all of you know Dr. Paul suffers from something call MSM Rejection Syndrome. Iowa is an "old state." It has the highest capita of seniors in the country. Not only that it has deep-roots. I personal know a dozens of families whose great, great, great, great, grand whatever crossed the river from Illinois way back when. Mr. and Mrs. Iowa Retiree do not sit on the computer surfing the internet or listen to shortwave radio to get the latest on the NWO. They watch corporate controlled television, listen to corporate controlled radio, and read corporate controlled newspapers. (The liberal press is only as liberal as their corporate masters want them to be.) Dr. Paul has a problem - little exposure. There are several methods to counter this, but none of them are cheap.

But first, understand Iowans don't like outsiders telling them what to think or do. Imagine the reaction of Mr. and Mrs. Iowa Retiree to a bunch of out of staters telling them why Dr Paul is the tops. So the idea of swarms of out of state volunteers knocking on doors may not produce the results expected.

Thus, Dr. Paul must be introduced to the people of Iowa in a round-about way. First campaign signs. I have several members of my group willing to make and post signs but I can not pull signs out of thin air. Nor, can I pull money out of thin air as well. There's rent to be paid along with every other bill of daily life. So, I'm starting the "Iowa Ron Paul Sign Project" with a $100 donation. If you want signs in Iowa, match my donation and I'll get the signs up, otherwise don't complain.

Send your donation to:
Iowa Ron Paul Street Sign Project
c/o John Kurr
2023 64th Street
Windsor Heights, Iowa 50322

As I write this there are 322 meet-up groups. If each one matched my $100 there would be enough to produce 100,000 signs of various shapes and sizes.

Second, advertising on the broadcast media is another way around the MSM. I'd like to run ads during the local news hours to counter the lack to RP coverage. In Des Moines the tv ad rates run for 60 bucks for 30 seconds topping out $250 or so. But, a respectable run of ads for 10 days would cost $12,500 to $15,000 in Des Moines alone. Then add Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Quad Cities, Omaha, plus a couple of smaller markets and a good ad run thru-out the state will cost $150,000 plus. Then throw in some radio, and a couple of dozen billboards and the price goes even higher. But, with my next paycheck I'll kick in $250 to the "Ron Paul Support Groups Multi-Media Campaign." At the present time there are 13,025 support members; if only half of them only matched half of my $250 with $125 then there would be some real cash to break the MSM stranglehold. Send your donation to the address listed above.

After a good round of broadcast ads then you can start pounding on doors with out of staters. Otherwise you won't get the result you expect.

Thanks,
John

John- I LOVE your idea on signs and will gladly help out on the signs funding. I also think some broadcasting would, of course, be a good idea. However, I have two reactions to your thoughts on Iowa (having, admittedly, spent very little time in the state myself).

First, I understand retirees don't like being told what to do, but isn't every other campaign doing this? Mitt Romney, a slick northeasterner, is sending everyone dvds, fliers, and people, to every potential GOP voter in the state. And he's top of the polls. Why shouldn't Ron Paul do this? I understand he has more name recognition than Ron, but 6 months ago few people had heard of him.

Next, signs are all well and good, but what do we need for the straw poll? I've heard all kinds of things--buses, volunteers, tents, food service, legions of out of state callers (which other campaigns do). Some of these are expensive, some aren't, but many are needed.

I realize you're just a meetup guy who wants to save our country, and can only do so much. Heck, I didn't even shell out the cash to start the Chicago meetup group. Which makes me think, where is the national campaign with all this??? I realize it's the "early stages" and they don't have that many resources (yet), but "grassfire" can only go so far in organizing a campaign. I think us freedom loving people are a bit too stuck on the idea of spontaneous order sometimes. Spontaneous order and unregulated systems are all well and great on a societal level, but when people are all working for one specific task (for Ron Paul to be elected President) central planning has its place. I just hope to God that the campaign is doing a bit of central planning, and spending, on this straw poll, because otherwise I'm very afraid for Ron Paul's momentum evaporating when he comes close to last in a poll that McCain and Rudy won't even be contesting.

Thank you!

My husband and I also got the job of organizers here in Virginia because we just happened to be the ones to pay $72. And because of that, we are expected to be ready-made campaigning gurus. Both the people in my group, and the people outside of my group expect us to know what needs to be done and its stressing me out.

At our next meeting I will ask for donations to send to Iowa to get you guys signs. I would send you some money now but I'm worried that if I send any more money to anything having to do with Ron Paul for a while my husband may divorce me. ;)

I agree w/John about how it would be preferable to have people from within the state calling delegates, rather than outsiders. *If* out-of-staters are needed, so be it, but I think it would make more impact on a delegate if the push were coming from a fellow in-state voter--I think I'd be more receptive to the message, and less likely to suspect, "What's his/her agenda". Just my $0.02.

Cheers!

John:

For a fund-raising effort of this magnitude and the importance of you getting the money ASAP, what do you think about setting up a PayPal account? If you were to do this, it would probably lead to greater success in this effort.

Have you contacted Ron Paul's campaign headquarters to see what their plans are for Iowa? You're right, we'd better get this thing moving and fast.

Thanks for everything you're doing!

I think HQ is going to need to fund the ads. Maybe we can grassrootsly handle the DVDs and foot work, but they should probably do the filming and stuff. We are going to need a few spots, that's for sure. But I think they can get by with not as many as you're suggesting (10 days seems a bit much). Romney has to spend a lot because his message is crap, we should be better off.

RPHQ needs to get their shit together and start funding the larger advertising campaigns. You are right, the phone calls and door-to-door should be subsequent to an add campaign push.

I am working on getting funding to send one of our Austin guys up to Iowa full time. He is perfect for the job.
