MANCHESTER, N.H. — A campaign stop at a New Hampshire eatery unraveled into a bit of a circus when the media scrum chasing Ron Paul apparently became too much for the 76-year-old Texas congressman to handle.

Paul had been planning to make the rounds through Moe Joe’s restaurant before settling down to eat breakfast with his wife, Carol — who said he enjoys apple pancakes — at a table in the corner.

But the plans quickly changed. Barely able to move through the restaurant as hundreds of journalists and videographers surrounded him on all sides, Paul ignored the questions being lobbed at him and slowly inched through the restaurant, offering a few autographs to supporters along the way.

“Guys, you’ve got to take it easy,” shouted one Paul staffer, imploring the media to give the congressman some space.

No such luck.

“Ron Paul: We have you surrounded. We are the media,” sounded the voice from a megaphone as Paul staffers ushered him into a waiting SUV, just minutes after he arrived at the restaurant.

Holding the megaphone was a man dressed roughly as a wizard, with shaggy hair and tousled beard, wearing a massive black boot upside down on his head

At least they're dressing the part now.

The question is, was it that Ron Paul couldn't handle this, or was it that he had better things to do with his precious time?

I'm sure the diners appreciated RP not staying with the circus following him around...unlike Santorum, who had no problem interrupting a playoff game.

Nice touch of class, Ron.

I hope at some point he can do something for those MA students who came up to see him. It sounds like they got shortchanged by the media crush.

Vermin Supreme ambushes Rick Santorum at the height of his popularity: barely covered by media, all independent.

Vermin Supreme ambushes Ron Paul today: media frenzy.

Don't blame the press. The campaign put out a media advisory last night. They invited the circus at breakfast.

Did they really? Usually they put out their media advisories and get them roundly ignored. He Who Must Not Be Named generally doesn't get covered even though the campaign is happy to tell them where he can be covered. And now, very suddenly, enough press shows up to shut the private business down and he has to get out before the fire marshall comes and starts writing the place expensive tickets.

Guess the media moguls have changed the rules. They ought to issue an advisory when they do that...

It's not surprising and should be expected. This is crunch time and the media and the campaigns are out in full force. If you don't want massive media presence, don't send out a media advisory for the last full day of complaining.

Not to mention the fact that Ron scolded someone for asking him a question during breakfast and now talks to people while they eat breakfast.

bullshit on the last part, big difference from trying to eat in a private hotel and have someone come up to you vs an event. you are smarter then this so i have to think your eating sometype of media virus.

Well, I was all set to disagree with you, but I just can't disagree with this. What's more, we should all quit whining on these very public forums for the duration as well.

We should, but we won't.

There was no event, it was people who came to eat breakfast. Ron Paul's campaign showed up to shake some hands and talk to people while they eat, and invited the media too.

Ok, well if this is actually true...10 bucks says this is either an organized cointelpro action, or, some of another candidate's folks assigned to discredit Ron Paul's name are taking it a step up.

Tell me though, this is an onion thing?

Paul Cuts Off CNN, Again

HOLLIS, N.H. — What’s left of Ron Paul’s patience with the news media appears to be running out.

During a campaign stop here Monday morning, Mr. Paul abruptly cut off a brief interview with the CNN reporter Dana Bash when she asked about his ability to connect with voters in New Hampshire.

A top aide to Mr. Paul, Jesse Benton, could be seen — and heard — shouting at Ms. Bash as Mr. Paul removed a microphone from his sweater.

Ms. Bash, who was interviewing Mr. Paul a few feet away from a group of reporters, had posed a timely question: a few hours earlier, a middle-aged woman had become angry with Mr. Paul for not spending enough time talking to voters at a diner in Manchester.

The woman, an Obama voter last time who said she was open to voting for Mr. Paul, even approached Mr. Paul’s S.U.V. as he prepared to drive off and began shouting at him through the closed car door to return to the diner and meet her and her mother.

Ms. Bash had asked Mr. Paul to talk about the episode, prompting Mr. Benton to intervene.

(Mr. Benton and Mr. Paul argued that it was the news media’s fault that he could not talk to more voters at the diner, because a gaggle of cameras had formed around the candidate in the narrow restaurant, restricting his movements.)

Afterward, Ms Bash could be heard apologizing to Mr. Paul’s wife. Mr. Paul then proceeded to do a previously scheduled interview with Fox News, a CNN rival.

This is the second time that Mr. Paul has walked out of an interview with CNN. He did it in December, when the political analyst Gloria Borger asked about his involvement with inflammatory newsletters.

Mr. Paul’s political operation, which once assiduously courted the news media when his nascent campaign struggled for attention, has restricted access in recent weeks. In Iowa, for example, aides told volunteers not to speak to any member of the news media.

Ron Paul Campaign Statement on Morning Media Incident

CONCORD, N.H. – Jesse Benton, national campaign chairman for the Ron Paul campaign, released the following statement today in regards to the media incident in Manchester, NH this morning:

“Dr. Paul has been committed to meeting one on one with New Hampshire voters, and has aggressively campaigned at town halls, house parties, and meet and greets since early last spring.

“This morning, he attempted to hold an event at Moe Joe’s Diner in Manchester, to speak with patrons and supporters in the last push before the New Hampshire primary. Unfortunately, Dr. Paul and his family were forced to leave early after over 120 members of the press created a mob-like atmosphere that was deemed to be unsafe for the candidate, Moe Joe’s customers, and reporters themselves.

“The campaign had planned to cover our normal degree of media interest, which is always ample. However, a significant increase in the press corps, largely driven by an influx of foreign journalists, exceeded all expectations.

“Mrs. Paul herself, attempting to campaign alongside her husband, was shoved aside by one reporter and told to 'get out of the way.'

“While we are very welcoming of media coverage and grateful for the interest in Dr. Paul and his campaign, basic safety simply must come first. On behalf of Dr. Paul and his campaign team, I would like to apologize to customers at Moe Joe’s who may have been distressed by this incident, and extend our gratitude and apologies to the owners, who were kind enough to have us.

“We ask the press, at all upcoming events over the next day and a half, to be respectful of both Dr. Paul and of New Hampshire voters, who are entitled to examine their candidates in a safe and responsible atmosphere.”
