1st time Obama Dems used to be either Bush repubs or had no party affiliation. The incredibly disastrous bush years did two things: 1) it activated the unaffiliated towards change (obama) and 2) pushed bush republicans away from GOP.
The change people were looking for has never materialized, therefore there's still a real appetite for change in the form of limited gov't, the exact opposite of the obama change. Less war (unless it is declared), emphasis on civil liberties and a realistic forecast for the economy isn't a hard sell.
Conversely, I don't think we'll ever be able to reach the religious right. They believe that islam wants to destroy the west and have some unexplicable fraternal loyalty towards the state of israel.
One thing is for sure, after 8 years of bush and 4 years of obama, there are even more disenfranchised voters that could be moved in our direction.
