We're tied for first for the nomination, yes. It's delegates that matter, people!

All projections. We can still end up with the lion's share of delegates by making sure our people get through the county, district and state conventions.

This is far from over. The battle has just begun.

And as far as momentum lost by not winning? I disagree. If this were any other candidate, perhaps. But this is the same Ron Paul that was at 10% last time and secured one of the three positions in the top tier. There's a lot to be excited about and it appears the campaign understands that delegates, along with organization and money will position us nicely going into 2012.

So in the delegate count which is what actually counts in the end(though the popular vote is what really mattered tonight in terms of the momentum....well usually does) Ron is tied.

Romney 7 (28%)
Santorum 7 (28%)
Paul 7 (28%)
Gingrich 2 (8%)
Perry 2 (8%)
Bachmann 0 (0%)
Huntsman 0 (0%)

1,144 (+) of 2,286 delegates are needed to win the nomination.

Great news!

Since delegates are all that matter for winning the GOP nomination this basically means he won!!!

That those delegates aren't necessarily committed to the candidates. Especially if a candidate drops out. They also won't actually be selected until much later right before the convention. Right now those numbers are just tentative promises.

Perry just suspended his campaign, that means his 2 delegates are up for grabs if he drops out completely. They will be negotiated for at the Iowa convention.

why does this site say romney gets 13 delegates, santorum 12, ron paul 0 ??

Though CNN has the overall count:

Romney 18
Santorum 8
Paul 7
Perry 4
Gingrich 2

apparently this is because the super delegates. There is nowhere near as many in the Republican nomination as the dems, but there is 100 something of them (governors and party leaders)....11 of those have gone Romney, 2 Perry and 1 Santorum so far. Democrats include representatives and senators in there super delegates.

I think I'm going to go cross-eyed... What happened to 7 each???

Does ANYONE on this Earth understand this process??? How can Paul "win" "secretly" with Romney having 18 delegates and Paul 7?

Romney got some "pre-selected" delegates or whatever they call it...

Romney's 11, Santorum's 1, and Perry's 2 has NOTHING to do with Iowa. They are party leaders, etc. that get to have a vote and automatically be a delegate themselves. This is nation wide. The 7's were for Iowa.

That means Romney had an 11 point lead before the game even started in Iowa???

I don't even...

HOW IS THIS FAIR???

Listen.

I live in Iowa. It can be confusing but here it is. Iowa gets 28 delegates to the national convention. Twenty-five of them are chosen through a selection process that I will briefly describe below and the remaining three are from state central committee, such as the chairman etc.

At the precinct level(all 1,784 of them) delegates and alternates were nominated and elected to attend their respective Republican County Convention held on March 10th. Delegates may have a preferred candidate but their is no commitment. This theoretical 7,7,7,2,2 is all nonsense. Usually delegates represent the turnout of the popular vote but if there is a well organized candidate that has passionate supporters they tend to do better with the delegate process. From the county level convention delegates are then selected to advance to the district convention and from there on to the state and then the national convention. This process is not over until June of this year. There is too much time and tiers to tell whom got what, regarding delegates.

Yes. Going into Iowa, Romney had 11 pledged delegates, Perry 2, and Santorum 1.

Though apparently, CNN may not have it exactly right. This page Romney 12, Perry 2, and santorum 1.

Apparently the Democratic Convention Watch kept track in 2008 and is again this year of the superdelegates, of which there are apparently 132 which are not bound by the decision of the primary/caucus. If these figures are correct, does it somehow imply that Paul actually got the most delegates in Iowa, disregarding superdelegates?

In short, we did just fine, we're very much in the game for the nomination, and the people who've fallen into despair really need to get hold of themselves and get some perspective.
