View Full Version : We Desperately Need a Catchy, Positive Alternative to Paulbot/Paultard

One of the key lessons in political marketing strategy that I learned from Michael Cloud is "define yourself, or be defined by your enemies." I can't think of a single instance that more clearly and effectively spells out the truth of that statement than the fact that, everywhere I go, people are condemning "Paulbots", or "Paultards", "Paulnuts", "Paulistas", "Paulestinians", etc.

In trying to avoid stooping to the level of our opponents and sticking to the principles and issues of importance in the Paul campaign, I'm afraid we have inadvertently ceded the territory when it comes to the strictly political and strategic questions of how to market Ron Paul and his ideas.

Now that we're on the cusp of becoming a major American political force, I think we deserve some more dignified nomenclature, even from the loyal opposition.

Why worry about fighting this? I have yet to read any logical or adult toned language or truth from people like that. They're even used in an email smear campaigns. You think they would have used a serious toned article that used logical thoughts before sending the article to everyone on their mailing list: http://www.thenorthwestreport.com/patriot-action-networks-smear-campaign-against-ron-paul/

Just tonight at the Blaze, someone wrote something to the effect that courteous people are Paul supporters and
ones slinging insults are Paul-bearers. As in funeral?

I love to open a thread and see three great posts come rapid-fire this way! :)

nnta, I'm so proud to have coined that nickname. Though I kind of wish I had popularized Philhelm's, just because it might be fun to be Charlie Sheen for a day...

Since they keep pounding that obnoxious 'quixotic' meme (and making it obvious how scripted they are in the process), why wouldn't we just all call ourselves Sancho Panza..?

"The Rontourage" from BuddyRey is the best so far...

As for Paultard, I just address myself as such, a "Ronulan Paultard", taking away their opportunity to call me that... First they call you Paultard... then they call you dick and cultist... then they just flat out blow up because they cannot further debate the subjects without looking stupid... you pretty much won, they just don't realize it... but it's not about them, it's about the ones on the outside looking in, who haven't made up their minds... they see/hear that, it means you win them 9 times out of 10...

I've been thinking about starting a project for quite a while, if the project is to be done properly I'm going to need some help. I figured I'd post here to see if there's any enthusiasm for the idea. This particular project starts out as a defense of effort, to try and not so much dissipate, but to turn a possible disadvantage into an advantage.

The “disadvantage” is the slur “paulbot”, I know it's not the most damaging of slurs or disadvantages but I still thought that I might as well put up an initial road block by registering the domain name, if possible. “paulbot.com” was already taken by the same fellow who owns another few domains with first name and bot such as “mikebot.com”, so I ended up registering “ronpaulbot.com” .
I figured that the fellow who owns “paulbot.com” Isn't likely to sell it, so anyone who really wanted to use a website for something like that would probably have to have ended up with “ronpaulbot.com”.

I had quite a bit of experience with “chat bots” in the past, specifically I used to work with modifications of the “Alicebot”. Various implementations of the Alicebot have won contests based on fooling human judges into thinking that the bots are actually humans. Now, far from being anything approaching artificial intelligence these bots are as good as they are based on the sheer number of replies that are programmed into it. It seems to me that if a lot of people collaborated that a very good example could be the result, and I believe that we could actually win the Loebner Prize.

The Loebner Prize is awarded to the bot that fools the most judges and comes closest to demonstrating artificial intelligence. There are a number of categories, I think it might be possible to win the Silver Medal, that comes with a $25,000 first prize award. The contest is held in October of every year, specifically October of 2012. In certain circles a great deal of publicity comes with winning that contest.

I've put together an example that isn't very good, just meant to serve as a starting discussion point. For example, I've made this bot as if it is Ron Paul bot perhaps it might be better for the bot to be made to respond from the perspective of a Ron Paul supporter, a very educated Ron Paul supporter.

What would be necessary for volunteers to do would be to converse with the bot and when they get to point in the conversation where the bot gives an inadequate answer to compose an adequate answer or response and submit it. It wouldn't take too long before would be a very impressive bot. The bot also logs conversations so every time anybody had a conversation with it it would be possible to see any questions that were answered unsatisfactorily.

Also, it wouldn't take too long before it became a very effective education tool. I've managed to modify the standard Alice bot program so that it can take speech input, and give video and synthesized speech responses. This means somebody could ask a question such as “where do you stand on States Rights” and the bot would return a video that explains it (the position) and perhaps adds a further reply intended to provoke a subsequent question.

This would be a fairly long-term project and the full value would really only be realized if Ron Paul ends up as either the Republican candidate, or perish the thought, a third-party candidate for president. Nevertheless, it would probably be at least somewhat useful right from the start.

At any rate, I have explained it enough for at least for a beginning and I'm open to any ideas. You can see the beginning, as in I have it set up and ready to be improved. You can say "what are Austrian Economics" and eventually pick "history", which is as far as I went. I'd be willing to spend an hour or two a day on it assuming any help/interest, which if there was a decent amount of help, would make quite an impressive bot within a week.

Good point. I'm not going away. Ron Paul -- Rand Paul -- may go away -- but the MOVEMENT MUST LIVE ON

A more-generic term, not involving the Paul name would be a much more meaningful and long-lasting name.

Constitutionalists would be good.
