The "For Liberty" does some kind of weird grid pattern filter to make the old low-resolution debate clips look less crappy when blown up to HD. Anyone know what this is called?

I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements, in case that's relevant.

Try a Gaussian Blur and a Sharpen filter in tandem.

Very time consuming optical trick of playing prepared QuickTime movies off a cinema display, and shooting the monitor with an HD cam, with an audio feed patched into the cam. The angle, focal length, and focus have to be set just right for it to work.

No filters were used.

Wow. LOL. Looks like I'll be trying a different approach (the only video camera I have is an iphone) but very interesting to hear. Thanks Adam!

Chris' way looks better but what I did on the debate clip in the last phone from home ad with Dr. Paul was use Final Cut Pro's hatched plugin. Just increase the lines.
