Presidential candidate Gary Johnson is dropping out of the race as a Republican, and will instead seek the nomination of the Libertarian party, according to Politico.
The move doesn't come as much of a surprise. In November, the former New Mexico governor indicated he was seriously considering running for president as a Libertarian, telling the Santa Fe New Mexican he felt "abandoned" by the Republican party. "The Republican Party has left me by the wayside," he said.
Politico reports Johnson will announce his decision at a press conference in Santa Fe on Dec. 28. His Facebook page lists an event occurring that day -- which will be live-streamed -- but reveals no additional details.

Why isn't he running for Senate in New Mexico? Still don't get it.

He has even worse name recognition than Ron Paul had in 08. If he's lucky, he might draw 2%

Lol, no. If he can't get more than a couple percentage points as a Republican then how will he gain the support as a third-party candidate?

I'm wondering if this a move for Dr. Paul. It seem's possible he's trying to stir up a little media attention then hand it over.
Time will tell, but I would say that when the time comes GJ will throw everything he has behind Paul. that may not be much but I will applaud the effort and every single headline will count.

I really don't understand what he's trying to do. He wants to become even less relevant?? I don't get it. Why not run for Senate?

This frees up more voters for Ron Paul. Also, it lets the establishment know that at least one credible 3rd party candidate is not going away. Gary Johnson is 1000X better than Bob Barr (duh!).

This might be good to keep donald trump at bay. Donald would now have to run as the 4th party candidate

So I guess this means his name won't be on the ballot in Iowa or NH where he polls at about 2% in each state. We could use a nice 2% bump. :)

I'm pretty sure it is too late to change ballots.
Besides, if they were still pulling for GJ with Ron in the race, they probably don't want Ron.

One wonders if it was the plan all along;)

Given some of the shots at Ron, I doubt it.

Well, I suspect that if Ron is the nominee, then Gary would throw the weight of the Libertarian party behind RP.

Paul would achieve a near three way tie with independent voters, getting 27% to Obama's 32% and Romney's 31%.
they don't poll it with Ron having the nomination and GJ running LP. I suspect GJ would get less then.

I like Gary Johnson. But Paul's got my vote and way too much of my money.
Honestly, I won't hate on GJ if he runs LP. I'll still respect him for being stubborn and principled. I am the same way; wouldn't bow out for anyone if I didn't want to.
