The economic policy director for Jon Huntsman's presidential campaign wants you to know that her boss is a conservative, but she thinks the idea that Ron Paul could cut $1 trillion from the federal budget in one year is "ludicrous."

At a Wednesday panel discussion hosted by the America's Future Foundation, a club of young libertarians and conservatives in Washington who meet regularly over beer to network and debate about politics, Jennifer Pollom, Huntsman's economic director, joined campaign aides for Gary Johnson, Ron Paul and a former Mitt Romney staffer to discuss why their candidate would best represent conservatives as the presidential nominee of the Republican Party. The real fun (by D.C. standards) started when Jack Hunter, a blogger for Paul's presidential campaign, touted his boss's promise to slash $1 trillion from the federal budget.

"Having been on the Budget Committee and having worked in the federal government and in the Senate for quite a while, I think a trillion dollars is kind of ludicrous," said Pollom, who formerly served as the counsel for the Senate Republican Policy Committee. "That's my personal opinion, that is not the stance of Governor Huntsman. We're more concerned about tax policy right now. We're deeply concerned about the deficit and the debt, but we're more concerned about jobs and freezing spending where it is right now."

If Ron wanted to, he could shut down the federal government for a few days. That'd be at least a few billion I'd bet.

ED budget: 69.9 billion
DOE budget: 29.5 billion
DOI budget: 9.9 billion
DOC budget: 13.1 billion
HUD budget: 48 billion

That's 170 billion right there, or seventeen percent of the total. Not a bad bite in and of itself, eh? I think he can do it.

"That's my personal opinion, that is not the stance of Governor Huntsman."

So is Huntsman afraid of going on the record himself, or has he lost the respect of his advisers to the point where they feel comfortable going "lone wolf"?

So did the aide critique what in the actual plan was not feasible?

It is written down, go ahead, pick it apart.

Reminds me of Scent of a Woman.

"Michael thinks the Tango is hysterical."
"Well, I think Michael's hysterical."

Interesting to note that Jonathan Bydlack, the Ron Paul 2008 campaign treasurer, is now working for Gary Johnson.

Yeah. OK. To deal with the mess we're in, we just need to "freeze spending" and rearrange "tax policy" deck chairs. That's not ludicrous. Not at all.

So capping spending at 1.3 trillion over and above the 2.3 trillion budget is not ludicrous?

3.6 trillion in spending is ok and tinkering with the tax code is all we need?

Last time I checked Obama intended to freeze federal spending at 2011 levels way back in '09 or '10... Not that he's pushed Congress to pass a budget since he's been in office or anything.

People who think like this don't understand the urgency and size of the problem. "Tinkering around the edges", as Ron Paul says, isn't going to help. We need BIG cuts ASAP.

Worrying about jobs is pointless when all the roadblocks that have stymied growth in the economy are still in place and growing bigger. This economy has been stalled out for a long time now. A technical "drop" in the unemployment rate is misleading. It's nothing more than a reflection of Americans' loss of hope in things improving soon.

Ron could pardon everyone convicted of a non-violent drug offense & save us 100 Billion dollars.

Huntsman: I'm not even going to try to balance the budget.

I always wonder about these folks who say cutting a trillion is too much in one year. What, spending a trillion less wouldn't work in 2013, but it'd work in 2017? Is that logical at all? Or is it that you don't really plan on doing any real cutting, and you just want credibility as a conservative, while passing the problem on to your successor? Hmmmmmmm?

The only thing that is ludicrous is the speed at which this country's finances are falling apart.
