Paul 22%
Gingrich 19%
Bachmann 18%
Perry 15%
Romney 10%

SIOUX FALLS — Ron Paul is a narrow choice among South Dakota Republicans in the race to be the GOP presidential nominee in 2012.

But Newt Gingrich is more likely to be the party’s nominee, they said.

That’s according to a poll by Nielson Brothers Polling, a Sioux Falls polling firm that conducted a statewide survey earlier this month. According to the poll, Paul, a Texas congressman, has the support of 22 percent of South Dakota Republicans, followed by former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich at 19 percent and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann with 18 percent.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry receives 15 percent and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was the last of the candidates surveyed with 10 percent.

Another 16 percent of Republican voters said they were undecided.

More delegates... More delegates...

Even if Paul doesn't manage to win this thing outright, I'm sure he will have enough delegates to prevent the rest of them from hitting the magic number. This means we'll be in the driver's seat at the convention because NOBODY will want to isolate US!!!

But I wonder if Ron Paul TV and radio ads are running in SD as a result of Ron Paul's Iowa purchases.

Is this the first time he's leading a state?

No, it isn't. I cannot remember the exact details, but I do recall a late 2007 poll from Alaska where Ron Paul was leading with like 27%. As I remember, the headline was originally something like "Alaskans prepared to nominate fringe candidate" or something like that. Ha.

I vaguely remember that as well, but I don't think it was a scientific poll.

Loved the third comment

I would love to see Ron lead in all 50 states.

I'm telling you, when it comes time to pick a VP, Ron should choose Sarah Palin of Alaska.

That crap about Newt is based on a question these polls ought not be asking:

Although Paul is the top choice among Republicans, Gingrich will likely be the nominee, according to 24 percent of the Republicans who responded.

There is something incestuous about asking "Who do you think will win?" to your polling audience and conflating this with actual opinion. At that point, what they are polling is not sentiment but the effectiveness of the Fox-lead mainstream media. However, these numbers are used to influence sentiment and drive voter turnout (up or down) via the bandwagon effect:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandwagon_effect

They might as well ask, "Who is the media talking more about?". And then they can report that "90% of Americans agree that Newt and Mitt are the two frontrunners!". Co-anchor spins it further, "Yeah the support for these two is phenomonal!".

I'd like to think this is because of all the hard work we did for years ago, but I don't think I can take credit for it. I think if Paul had remained Viable, we could have gotten a lot of delegates last year (and if the campaign had bothered to spend any money at all we would have hit our 20% last time and gotten 6 even then.). This year the campaign is running to WIN!!! so you can be sure he'll be putting money into this race this time. Many county chairs even like Ron Paul, and we had the best expereince at our state convention of any other state I think. This is good to know though. Ron Paul will have delegates from our state, if he can win Iowa and do well and stay in the race. So if you have fence sitter supporters in earlier states, make sure to tell them that we'll be watching their 6.

After all the recent polls with Paul in the mid twenties in IA, I am no longer surprised about this SD poll.
I think we will get over the media blitz against us, and these numbers will keep rising.
(I am mainly posting to bump this thread to remind everyone that we are already polling in the mid twenties outside of Iowa as well as inside.)

Do they matter if Ron is on top?
