What a joke! Telling people they can't park cars on their own property?

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP)—

Some Winston-Salem property owners and a city councilmember want to bring back a lawn parking ban proposal that was tabled a few years ago.

The proposal is mainly over rental properties with multiple tenants.

Councilwoman Molly Leight said cars that park on lawns kill the grass, and some landlords have not been able to fix the problems with gravel and mulch.

"It just leads to further deterioration of a property. We just want to keep up our property value," said Barnes Daniels with the British Woods Neighborhood Association. Daniels' neighborhood was among the constituents in favor of the original ban.

Leight said she has been hearing complaints from constituents ever since the city tabled the original proposal in 2008. City officials were concerned about tight city budgets and fears of workload increases on trimmed city staff.

"It was time to bring it back, I felt like. It's not a problem that goes away," Leight said.

Greensboro and High Point passed lawn parking bans in 2009.

"Six cities in North Carolina have addressed the problem and have something on the books. I don't know why we can't," Daniels said.

Besides the ban proposal, Leight and others are asking city officials to find out how the city can force landlords to provide permanent solutions.

The city's general government, housing and development committee is looking into possible ordinances and plans to discuss options with the entire city council in March.
