Guess that's change you can believe in. Just heard on the radio that Obama has taken his veto threat off of the table, and will sign the bill allowing indefinite detention.

The only change was that he can't hold people AFTER they've been found innocent in a court.

Is he still mandated to hold Al Qaeda and affiliates? His main problem seems to be that it was mandated rather than just authorized.

But this is really irrelevant if detainees have no rights to a trial?

Of course he's not going to veto it. But he'll get props from some uninformed Obamabots for merely threatening to veto it.

I don't think he can veto it if it had more than 2/3rds support in congress.

Sure he can. Congress can override with a 2/3 majority in both houses but the president can still initially veto the bill. In fact, there have been cases where the president vetoed a bill and persuaded enough members to change their vote to prevent an override.

kylejack
12-14-2011, 05:58 PM
They wouldn't have the votes to override, especially if the POTUS made it clear that he didn't want an override to his advocates in Congress.

Once the President signs off on it, is there any way a court can say it's unconstitutional?

Yes, probably won't happen until he detains someone citing the Act as authority.

Supposedly the person still gets a habeas hearing, and can raise the issue there. Supposedly.

I had read links on twitter saying he had actually ASKED for that and was only threatening to veto because it had been weakened. I don't have the full story, though. The progressives were absolutely steaming, and I will too, I'm sure, as soon as I find out what sources they were looking at.

Just everyone remember that this bill and those provisions in NDAA were inserted and sponsored by US Senator Carl Levin and backed by John McCain and Lindsey Graham. The True Travesty is Levin and McCain kept this SECRET from the Public without Debate in the closed door Armed Senate Committees game plan. These people below knew, they all knew, but never alerted the American Citizens of this operation.

VITTER Amendment to remove the UNCONSTITUTIONAL provisions, was struck down in a vote. This NDAA tyranny is to protect the Money Masters and Government, not the American people. Anyone can be labeled a terrorist now, for any reason/excuse, and imprisoned without trail or due process for life, if they wish.

Shocker!

House Roll Call vote: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2011/roll932.xml

I was pleasantly surprised by Gosar and Flake voting Nay.

House passes $662 billion defense bill (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iFsyaljotNCsnPSzq9tjRtOkPKZg?docId=e3c1b02cc c1a42b78e94120a4a2f53a5)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House passed a massive $662 billion defense bill Wednesday night after last-minute changes placated the White House and ensured President Barack Obama's ability to prosecute terrorist suspects in the civilian justice system.

The vote was 283-136 and reflected the strong support for annual legislation that authorizes money for the men and women of the military as well as weapons systems and the millions of jobs they generate in lawmakers' districts.

It was a rare instance of bipartisanship in a bitterly divided Congress. The Senate is expected to pass the measure on Thursday and send it to Obama.

The House vote came just hours after the administration abandoned a veto threat over provisions dealing with the handling of terrorism suspects.

Applying pressure on House and Senate negotiators working on the bill last week, Obama and senior members of his national security team, including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, had sought modifications in the detainee provisions.

Negotiators announced the changes late Monday, clearing the way for White House acceptance.

In a statement, press secretary Jay Carney said the new bill "does not challenge the president's ability to collect intelligence, incapacitate dangerous terrorists and protect the American people."

Sickening.

Zerohedge: Congress Passes $662 Billion Defense Bill, Aka The NDAA (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/congress-passes-662-billion-defense-bill-aka-ndaa)

Congress just passed the National Defense Authorization Act in a 283-to-136 vote. 190 Republicans and 93 Democrats voted for; 43 Republicans and 93 Democrats voted "against." Prepare to be arrested, without charge, simply because someone "up there" believes you engage in "terroristy" stuff. Good luck proving them wrong.

SCOTUS will never find this unconstitutional. Never.

He's right about BSC! McCain and Newt Romney. But there is one R candidate he failed to mention who would NEVER sign this abomination into law.

We Have Crossed the Rubicon (http://lewrockwell.com/peters-e/peters-e124.html)

Do you suppose cows have any idea what’s coming as they’re marched down the chute? Or do they stare with bovine indifference at the tail and hind quarters in front of them, until they’re suddenly – and very briefly – startled by the man with the nail gun?

Perhaps Americans will – likewise too late – ask themselves What Happened in the very near future. Perhaps just after the midnight knock comes and they are taken away into the night.

It is not an exaggeration.

America is now on the cusp of becoming a state that does exactly such things; things exactly like the things done by 20th century horror shows such as NS Germany or Stalin’s USSR. Literally. Not “this is where it might lead” or “the tendency is similar.” Exactly, literally, the same thing. The only difference is that it awaits being done on a mass scale. But the power to do it openly – brazenly – has been asserted.

And is about to be sanctified by law.
